Establishment of Hydrometeorological Data Sets for Model Validation and Analysis in BALTEX

Objective



The objective of this project is the establishment of a homogeneous hydrometeorological data set for the water catchment region of the Baltic Sea on the territories of Russia and Belarus. This data set will consist of meteorological surface observations, river runoff data and other hydrological parameters which are basically needed for model validation and diagnostic studies in the framework of the Baltic Sea Experiment (BALTEX). Time resolution of the data is three hours for the meteorological data, and one day for the river runoff and precipitation data. Data will be extracted from the routine operational procedures and need to be digitised and processed for scientific usage. A focus of this project is to increase the efficiency of the data processing in view of the use of the data for scientific purposes. This includes especially an acceleration of the processing time compared to the operational routine practices.

The following national services in Russia and Belarus will primarily establish and process the data: the State Hydrological Institute and the Leningrad Centre for Hydrometeorology in St. Petersburg, and the State Department for Hydrometeorology in Minsk. This project is part of an international initiative for BALTEX with contributions from 10 countries in the Baltic Sea water catchment region. Within BALTEX, the German Weather Service in Offenbach, and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute are holding the BALTEX data centres for meteorology and hydrology, respectively. Both institutions co-ordinate the creation of homogeneous BALTEX data sets for the entire Baltic Sea catchment region and, hence, take part in this project.

This project, together with similar efforts being undertaken in other BALTEX countries, will produce a unique hydrometeorological digital data set for the entire Baltic Sea drainage basin. Such data set is hitherto unavailable. The development of this data set will be documented annually in BALTEX data reports, in the GEWEX and BALTEX Newsletters and respective WMO/WCRP reports. The establishment of such a data set is a basic requirement for BALTEX, and it constitutes a major challenge for BALTEX at the same time. This data set will be most valuable for numerous scientific groups for validation of models and data analysis. The BALTEX data policy foresees free exchange of the data to all researchers working on BALTEX issues. The BALTEX data will be delivered to all interested groups in the 10 countries presently co-operating in BALTEX, but also to groups in other countries with a specific research interest in the Baltic Sea catchment region. The results of this project will, therefore, be published in numerous scientific journal articles.
