Objetivo
Ground geomagnetic field variations contain information on the electromagnetic characteristics of the Earth's space environment. These variations depend on the location and characteristics of the magnetospheric sources as well as on the relationship to the solar wind. The simultaneous analysis of satellite and radar data for monitoring the space weather and of the energy balance is the main goal of this project. It is planned to use data from the European IMAGE and EISCAT chains of magnetic stations, the STEP network of magnetic stations, Russian magnetic observatory data, Viking, Freja and DMSP satellite data, World Data Centres magnetic and satellite data. As a result, the spatial and temporal variations of the magnetospheric plasma domains and three-dimensional current systems will be obtained. The location of the polar cap, the polar cusp, the auroral oval with discrete auroral forms, the plasmapause and the inner boundary of the geotail plasma sheet, will be investigated.
The electromagnetic characteristics of the Earth's magnetosphere and of the energy balance will be obtained by a combination of numerical modelling and ground-based and in situ satellite observations. A dynamic model of the magnetosphere dynamics will be developed and used in the proposed investigations.
Starting from existing stationary models of the magnetospheric magnetic field a non-stationary model of the magnetospheric field will be constructed. The following parameters are to be estimated: geotail magnetic flux; time-dependent distribution of electric fields and currents in the magnetosphere; Hall and Pedersen conductivities in the ionosphere; Joule dissipation by ionospheric currents; energy balance in the Earth's environment.
One of the main goals of the project is the combination of the European and Russian observational networks with available information from satellites. Coordinated measurements from different regions on the Earth's surface are crucial for the global forecasting of the space weather.
