Study of the Propagation and Absorption Mechanisms of Lower Hybrid Waves in High Temperature Plasmas

Objectif

The application of Lower Hybrid (LH) waves on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) needs further experiments on wave propagation and absorption. In spite of vast efforts of a wide research program, important aspects of plasma-wave interaction have not been yet solved. The transition from the LH interaction with electrons in the current drive regime to ion heating is not yet sufficiently understood. The description of the LH wave propagation in toroidal geometry needs to include non-WKB effects.

LH waves are used for plasma heating and current drive in large scale thermonuclear experiments on tokamaks like JET, JT-60, Tore Supra, FTU. Smaller tokamaks complement these experiments with dedicated physics investigations. The FT-2 tokamak at Ioffe Institute, St. Petersburg has a long-standing tradition in this area with the discovery of important physics mechanisms. In particular, the central parametric instability responsible for fast ion generation and heating, was found. In addition, theoretical investigation was performed on LH wave propagation in tokamaks.

The project aims at theoretical and experimental studies of LH wave propagation in a toroidal plasma and of mechanisms of absorption by electrons and ions. The main topics will be the development of a self-consistent code, including antenna coupling, wave propagation and absorption in the plasma, the detection of LH wave spectra in the plasma and comparison with the calculated spectra and the experimental verification of new theoretical ideas on wave absorption and the transition from an electron to an ion damping regime. The research work at Ioffe Institute, St. Petersburg, will be complemented by high power LH heating and current drive experiments on the FTU tokamak at Frascati, Italy and on the JET tokamak at Culham, UK. The results will improve future LH operation on the large European tokamaks and clarify remaining issues for the design of a LH system for ITER.

The results of the studies described in this research proposal will be published in Institute reports of the participating laboratories, in papers submitted to the European and to the IAEA Conferences on Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion and in publications in the main relevant Journals (NUCLEAR FUSION, PLASMA FYSIKY).

Programme(s)
