THREE-DIMENSIONAL ELECTROMAGNETIC AND THERMAL TOMOGRAPHY OF THE ACTIVE CRUSTAL ZONES

Objective

The main objective of the Project is developing scientifically substantiated methodology for integrated three-dimensional (3-D) imaging active crustal zones based on electromagnetic and heat flow measurements, carried out at the earth's surface, as well as on the resistivity and temperature records available from the wells.

The supplementary goal is evaluation of the possibility of the ground EM monitoring of the underground heat flow alterations based on the study of the correlation between 3-D conductivity and heat flow (temperature) distributions in the test sites with different geological setting and surface heat flow density.

Research programme:
First, preliminary 3-D conductivity models of the test sites will be contsructed based on prior geological and geophysical information on the regions, results of the past interpretations of EM data and hypotheses on the ranges of the unknown parameters. Second, numerical modeling of the magnetotelluric fields using various values of the uncertain parameters will be carried out.

Preliminary three-dimensional conductivity models of the test sites, constructed at the first stage, will be further refined in the domains of a special interest. To this end a full-range Bayesian statistical inversion of the MT data will be carried out taking into account TEM data, prior geological and geophysical information, resistivity well logs, the knowledge of the noise level and expert estimates of the uncertain parameters. The output of this stage consists of the posterior values of the unknown parameters, their probability density functions and the parameters' uncertainties.

At the third stage three-dimensional temperature models of the test sites will be constructed based on the knowledge of the surface heat flow; temperature well records; estimations of the thermal conductivity and diffusivity; numerical modelling of the geothermal field; and artificial neural network approach.

Finally, 3-D electrical conductivity and temperature distributions in the studied areas will be jointly analysed in the same underground domains aimed at establishment of the correlation between these parameters. To this end the correlation analysis as well as the artificial neural network approach will be applied to the electrical conductivity and temperature values estimated in the same spatial domain.

Expected results
1. Three-dimensional geoelectric models of the Larderello-Travale geothermal zone, Hengill volcanic area, Bishkek Geodynamic Poligon and Borjomi seismic area.
2. Three-dimensional temperature models of the above mentioned test sites.
3. Estimations of the spatial correlation between the electrical conductivity and temperature distributions in the studied areas.
4. Methodology of the underground 3-D conductivity / temperature distribution forecast by the surface EM / temperature measurements and the resistivity / temperature well records.
