Objective
The distribution, life history characteristics, population structure, stock boundaries, recruitment patterns, habitat and community characteristics will be studied forCrangon allmanni, a shrimp species, which shows patchy distribution in the North-East Atalntic, from the English Channel to the White Sea and the eastern Barents Sea. The data obtained will be compared to existing ones about C. crangon a much more common and widely distributed species, commercially fished in the North Sea. The data on habitats and communities in which C. allmanni populations occur in the White sea will be collected and analysed and compared to the available data from the North Sea in order to get an idea about the factors limiting the distribution of the shrimp. Analysis of the genetic structure of C. allmanni populations will allow estimating the degree of gene flow and natural barriers, thus producing information on the real degree of isolation of individual populations. If the gene pool proves homogeneous ecology is the only factor triggering the occurrence of the shrimp. An overall synthesis on life-history and population diffenciation of C. allmanni will be done emphasizing the relation of life histories to ecology and evolution. The data obtained during the survey in the Gorlo of the White Sea will be important for environmental risk assessment with regard to proposed industrial development, in particular, the plans for the Murmansk pipeline system and probably demanded very soon. They will also serve as baseline study to establish a long-term scientific polygon for environmental and biodiversity monitoring. Cooperative interdisciplinary work of three groups of Russian universities, one Lithuanian university and one German institution tightly linked to education will facilitate the exchange of concepts and ideas in teaching marine biology, coastal studies and management.
