Objective
One of the main goals of this project is further development of the Muon System of the LHCb detector. This goal is closely related with a recent decision of the LHCb collaboration to replace the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC), initially planned to be used in a large part of the outer region of the Muon System, by the Wire Proportional Chambers (WPC) similar to those designed for all other parts of the Muon System. The proponents of this proposal will perform all necessary R&D related to design of the new WPCs and technology of their mass production. For this purpose, a new production site (PNPI-2) will be created at Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute in addition to already existing there WPC "factory" (PNPI-1). All necessary tooling and measuring systems will be prepared within the presented here project. Also, some prototypes of the muon chambers will be constructed and tested before the mass production will be started in mid 2004. The designed production rate at PNPI-2 will be one muon chamber per day so that 200 chambers could be constructed by the end of 2005.
Another important development will be design of a multi-channel High Voltage Supplier (HVS) for 5200 wire planes in the LHCb Muon System. This device should control currents and regulate high voltage independently on each plane. A prototype of such HVS has been recently constructed at PNPI for the CMS End Cap Muon System. The goal of this project is to adopt this system to the requirements of the LHCb Muon System.
Besides the engineering tasks, the participants of this project plan to continue the simulation studies of the LHCb detector performance and studies of various CP-violating b-decay channels attainable by the LHCb detector. Moreover, the emphasis will be done on preparations for future data analysis in a worldwide-distributed computing environment (Computing Grid) where the LHCb collaboration has already some pioneering results. Realization of this programme will allow to integrate the PNPI and ITEP computer centers into the LHCb data production / analysis system and to involve physicists in the remote laboratories into active evaluation of the physics reach of the LHCb detector.
This project will be executed jointly by the teams participating in construction of the LHCb Muon System.
