Experimental and Theoretical Study of Energy Deposition and Residual Activation Induced by Uranium Ions to Model the Beam Loss Hazards in the GSI Future Facility.

Objective

The objectives of the present proposal are directed towards getting reliable estimates for tolerable beam loss levels in the GSI Future Facility and are the following:
1. To measure the energy deposition profile for U ions with energies E=100 MeV/u - 1 GeV/u in iron and copper. The results will allow us to estimate the upper limit of tolerable beam losses into the super conducting magnets in order to avoid quenching events. They will also serve for verification of the heavy-ion transport code SHIELD to be used later for numerical studies of the radiation hazard by the lost beam ions.

2. To measure the residual activation doses induced by U ions of energies E=100 MeV/u - 1 GeV/u in iron and copper targets. The results will help us to get estimates of tolerable beam losses in order to ensure the "hand-on" maintenance of the accelerator equipment.

It is well known from the practice of high-current proton operation that the "hands-on" maintenance is the main factor limiting the tolerable beam loss level to 1 W/m for 1 GeV protons. There is no well-recognised estimates of tolerable limit for losses of heavy ions with eneries as high as E=1 GeV/u in the accelerator community so far.

The results will also be used for verification of the SHIELD code. An innovative methodology based on so-called whole-spectrum-processing will be applied for interpretation and evaluation of measured gamma-spectra of irradiated samples.

3. To model the beam loss processes in different parts of the GSI Future Facility with the help of the SHIELD code. This will allow us to get estimates for radiation hazard to the parts of the accelerator equipment delicate to irradiation, such as organic glues and insulators, silicon diodes and super conducting wires in the magnets, surrounded by different components with rather complex geometrical shapes and chemical compositions.

Also the radiation background around the area with expected high beam loss levels (like the collimators, the injection-extraction elements) is the target for the SHIELD simulations.

The prior SHIELD calculations of the neutron fluencies in the experimental set-up of the measurements of energy deposition and residual activation proposed in the present project will help to get better estimates of the U beam parameters necessary for the experiments.
