Advanced Residual Gas Profile Monitor for High Current Synchrotrons and Cooler Rings

Objetivo

The modern ion accelerators and storage rings require faster beam profile measurement with higher resolution. We propose a new residual gas monitor, which will operate on secondary electrons from the ion-residual gas interaction. Calculations of related cross section and the trajectories under the influence of the beam space charge will be performed. The secondary electrons are localized within Æ 0.1 mm filaments along uniform magnetic field lines generated by a permanent magnet. The development of a very compact magnet having a length in beam direction less than 30 cm with an transverse aperture of 40 cm is a challenging task. It will provide a field o 0.1 T with less than 5 % non-uniformity over the working region. To adopt this high resolution with the data acquisition system a CCD camera combined with an upstream MCP-phosphor screen is used. To realize a fast turn-by-turn readout a photodiode array of 100-channel is foreseen to measure a profile with a time resolution of 100 ns. The development of low-noise amplifier and fast digitisers will be performed. A user-friendly graphical interface will be developed. Tests for the monitor performance will be carried out.
The device will be used for operating purposes and new accelerator physics experiments regarding the properties of ultra-cold beams, as well as fast emittance changes during storage and acceleration of intense beams. The design of all components will be scalable to fit the properties of the various existing and planed accelerators at GSI and other labs like ITEP, FZ-Jülich or Manne-Siegbahn Institute.
