Objectif
The main goal of the proposed research project is to provide a comprehensive study on "no war no peace" societies, focusing on the analysis of its specific structural, institutional and value characteristics, therefore providing an opportunity to understand the state-of-the-art, perspectives and challenges of democratic transformations, conflict resolution and peacebuilding processes in such societies. In this respect the research will contribute to better understanding of social construction and development perspectives of "no war no peace" societies based on a comparative analysis of the Armenian and Azerbaijani cases - yielding both theoretical and policy relevant insights. Theoretical and evidence based findings of the research project will be analyzed with a view toward making recommendations to the structures (political and civil) that can affect change about how democratic transformations and peacebuilding processes can be effectively facilitated in "no war no peace" societies. The more specific objectives of the research project are identified as follows i. To elaborate a methodological apparatus and a theoretical framework for the scientific analysis of "no war no peace" societies focusing on their specific structural, institutional and cultural characteristics; ii. To use the elaborated theoretical model for a complex research on and an analysis of the Armenian and Azerbaijani societies; iii. To analyze the state-of-the-art, challenges and perspectives of democratic transformations in Armenia and Azerbaijan; iv. To identify factors, activities and development trends that can either promote or hinder peacebuilding efforts in Armenia and Azerbaijan; v. To develop scientific hypotheses concerning preconditions, alternatives and scenarios of transforming "no war no peace" societies into peaceful and democratic states; vi. To involve the local and international scientific communities in extensive discussions on the elaborated explanatory model of "no war no peace" societies based on research results as well as contribute to improving democratic transformations and peacebuilding efforts in these societies. The approach of the project is multidisciplinary, integrating conceptions from the fields of sociology and peace studies. The integration of both approaches is reflected in the general methodological approach of the proposed research project that is to study perspectives of peacebuilding for "no war no peace" societies as dependent processes on their structural, institutional and value peculiarities and vectors of democratic transformations. Qualitative and quantitative methods of sociological inquiry will be used to approach the topic from different perspectives including desk-based theoretical analysis, expert survey, mass survey, focus groups and document analysis. results of the research will be summarized in the final book that will be published in English, Armenian and Azerbaijanian languages.
