The Kongrat group identities throughout contemporary Central Asia. Changes and continuities in "tribal" culture

Objective

The project aims to account for changes and continuities in cross-national collective identities through the study of the various Kongrat groups, which represent a typical example of such a "tribal" ethnic group scattered all over Central Asia and who melted in contemporary nation-state societies but still keep their cultural difference and their historical memory alive. The research project combines ethnological survey, oral history, historiography and linguistics. It is based mainly on field study and first-hand sources.
