Objective
The project is aimed at detailed fundamental studies of charge transfer luminescence phenomenon and its possible applications. In some materials, Yb3+ ion as an activator exhibits very fast luminescence due to radiative charge transfer recombination. A detailed study of various systems will allow to clarify the structural conditions for obtaining a fast and efficient luminescent charge transfer centre. Such luminescence properties may be very suitable for scintillating materials used in medical imaging (such as positron emission tomography) and solar neutrino detection. Ytterbium-doped and ytterbium-based oxide single crystals of various structures and compositions will be grown. Spectroscopic measurements and scintillation characterizations will be performed to correlate the optical and scintillation properties to the crystal quality and composition. Timing properties as a function of various parameters such as temperature, energy and intensity of excitation will be investigated to assist understanding and simulation of important parameters leading to the fast luminescence due to radiative charge transfer recombination.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
