Objective
The basic purpose of this project is to develop a seamless and as automated as possible method of generating detector models for physics simulation directly from CATIA v5, the CAD (Computer Aided Design) system used at GSI, for the detailed design of the FAIR experiments. As a pilot project the CBM detector is used. Since the CBM collaboration uses Geant 3, Geant 4, as well as Fluka for detector simulation studies, their simulation framework CbmRoot is based on the VMC (Virtual Monte Carlo) package of ROOT. Therefore the final objective is to make the geometry defined in CATIA v5 available in VMC via an efficient procedure, so that the synchronization of the two models will be possible. It will facilitate finding a compromise between the physical performance of the setup and the reasonable simplification of the technical solutions and consequent reduction of the costs. Besides, the result of the project will help to save efforts and time otherwise spent for input of the detailed geometry into MC simulation software. It seems hard to create a fully automated universal converter, however certain level of automation may be found and facilitate the job of the geometry updates. Several approaches to handle the problems are foreseen in the project. The strategy of the work is to investigate possible ways of data conversion and expedient simplifications, to develop tools that facilitate this procedure in the maximum affordable extent, and to use the tools as early as possible in a realistic setting. As a model object for various conversion trials a 3D model of the CBM experiment at FAIR will be used. This model follows the R&D of all the detector systems; it will be maintained and updated in the frame of the project. The participating teams include CAD designers, MC simulation experts and software developers.
