Objective
PANDA is an approved experiment at the future FAIR facility at GSI. It is designed to challenge our attempt to understand the nature of the strong interaction and of hadronic matter. Exploiting the high luminosity and good quality of the cooled antiproton beam, PANDA is designed for precise measurements of possible exotic states, such as glueballs, hybrids, pentaquarks etc. in the quark confinement area. A compact and fast electromagnetic calorimeter to be constructed out of more than 20,000 large volume and high quality lead tungstate crystals will be one of the key detector components of the target spectrometer. Therefore, improvement of lead tungstate well beyond the present quality used for CMS at LHC became mandatory. This proposal is targeted to study carefully radiation hardness and recovery processes of lead tungstate crystals at -25 degrees C using a new control system for crystal quality and to achieve in collaboration with two Russian manufacturers a set of radiation hard crystals, statistically relevant for guiding mass production technology. Beside the most relevant parameters such as light output and response time down to low temperatures, radiation hardness will be another quality factor to choose the main manufacturer(s). Another goal is to design and assemble a prototype of a light monitoring system with high long-term stability to be used for PANDA EMC monitoring and inter-calibration. We plan to establish a particle-based calibration strategy together with this inter-calibration. Intensive Monte Carlo studies will be needed to accomplish this. One more objective is the development of application software dedicated for the reconstruction of electromagnetic probes and hadrons in the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter.
