Objective
The future international accelerator Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) has key features that offer a wide range of new and challenging opportunities for atomic physics and low-energy antiproton physics, which are pursued by the collaborations SPARC and FLAIR (see www.gsi.de/sparc and www.gsi.de/flair). Low-energy experiments will be located in the FLAIR building, which is designed such that it includes the experimental areas requested by the experiments with low-energy heavy ions within the SPARC collaboration as well as for low-energy antiprotons within the FLAIR collaboration. HITRAP, the trap facility for heavy highly charged ions and antiprotons, will serve as a high-brilliant source of low-energy particle beams in the FLAIR building. The gas targets, which are subject of this proposal, will be employed at the future FAIR facility for collision experiments with highly charged (stable as well as radioactive) ions and antiprotons. The HITRAP facility is currently under construction at GSI. This new facility is intended to decelerate ions up to fully stripped or hydrogen-like uranium ions and antiprotons from an energy of 4 MeV/u down to 6 keV/u by RF decelerator structures. Cryogenic temperatures will be reached by subsequent cooling in a Penning ion trap. The main objective of the project consists of the development and construction of a prototype of the pulsed high-density supersonic gas-jet target for atomic collision experiments with very slow antiprotons and highly charged heavy ions at the HITRAP facility at GSI/FAIR. This goal will be approached by combining the skills of teams from Darmstadt, Krakow and St. Petersburg in the field of atomic physics and molecular beams and by using advanced theoretical methods on gas dynamic simulations. By means of detailed computer simulations, an optimum design characteristics and operation conditions of the complex gas-jet target apparatus will be obtained prior to building the experimental hardware. In addition, the expected overlap profile of the gas jet with the planned ion and antiproton beams has to be tested by means of computer simulations. This overlap profile is crucial for an efficient registration of photons produced in ion-atom or antiproton-atom collisions. The experimental part of the project will include the technical design, construction of a prototype and assembling and testing of the target apparatus. Moreover, this device will be equipped with a system of supersonic jet diagnostics.
