Efficient manipulation of atoms and molecules and applications to non-linear optics and quantum information processing

Objective

The proposed project and collaboration aims at the development, investigation and implementation of new laser-based techniques to manipulate quantum systems. Special emphasis is set on new possibilities and applications of coherent interactions. The research program addresses current scientific efforts and hot topics in laser based science, including physics, chemistry and information science. The project deals in particular with (i) Enhancement of nonlinear optical processes to provide novel and efficient sources for coherent radiation, approaching new wavelength regimes. (ii) Development of new and robust methods to provide tools for quantum information processing. (iii) Studies on laser-induced interactions in complex multi-level systems. The investigations will be conducted in the gas phase and in solids, thus covering a broad range of appropriate media and materials. The cooperation partners perform both extensive experimental as well as theoretical investigations on the research subjects. The laboratories, provided with modern equipment and state-of-the-art laser systems as well as powerful computer systems, permit thorough investigations in atomic physics, molecular physics, solid state physics, physics of complex systems, laser physics, nonlinear optics, physical chemistry and quantum optics. The partners will cooperate closely on the proposed tasks. All tasks will be conducted as joint ones, including cooperation between theory and experiment, transfer of knowledge and exchange of co-workers. The cooperation partners perform investigation with regards to the following objectives. (i) Frequency conversion in coherently prepared media, i.e. to provide novel, efficient sources for short-wavelength radiation and ultra-broad spectra. (ii) Alignment of molecules in strong laser fields, i.e. to improve the techniques of alignment by intense laser fields. (iii) Electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT), stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and light storage in solids, i.e. to study quantum information storage and manipulation. (iv) Theory of EIT in solids and new EIT techniques, i.e. to develop a comprehensive theory of EIT in solids. (v) Selective excitation in multi-level systems. The project yields fundamental insight in laser-based science, in particular for coherent interactions between light and matter. Such interactions are relevant for a rich variety of applications in physics, chemistry, information science and material sciences. Among others, the proposed project permits the development of efficient sources for coherent radiation, of improved techniques for optical data storage and manipulation.
