COMPOUND WAVEGUIDE STRUCTURES FOR EFFICIENT FREQUENCY DOUBLING IN DIODE PUMPED SHORT WAVELENGTH MICROLASERS

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to fabricate two different prototypes of intense (2 W; continuous wave) coherent light sources at a wavelength of 532 nm.

The principle of both prototypes is the same, but the two devices differ in the materials used (KTP crystals and polymers) for second harmonic generation and the corresponding technology. In the devices, the second harmonic light is the result of lasing inside a cavity in the presence of diode pumped (10-20 Watt) Nd:YAG crystals. The cavity acts as such for the fundamental light only, and is built by selective mirrors, based on stacks of dielectric layers. Mode selection of the lasing mode at the fundamental frequency is accomplished by using an aperture or, in a later stage, a computer generated hologram.

The production of the two prototypes consists of the following steps:

- design of waveguiding structures that show both good modal field overlap and phase-matching;
- accurate production of the designed waveguides, including careful polishing and layer deposition;
- characterisation and optimisation of waveguides;
- production of complete devices for both prototypes;
- characterisation and optimisation of devices;
- commercial follow up.
