Extended Enterprise Resources, Network Architectures and Learning

Objetivo

EXTERNAL addresses the challenges met when forming an extended enterprise (EE), characterised by a dynamic and time-limited collaboration between business partners.
The goal of EXTERNAL is to provide solutions that make this collaboration effective and repeatable.
The objectives of EXTERNAL are focusing at developing methodology, infrastructure/tools and business solutions for EE modelling, analysis, engineering and operation. Also process learning; deployment of open knowledge-sharing infrastructures and validation of results will be tasks of the project.

Three use cases, evolving knowledge models, will integrate and test the approach, the methodology, and the tools. The use cases are EE deployment in SMEs, EE consultancy services and the project itself. When adopted, the results of the project will increase the competitiveness of European enterprises and provide new ways of knowledge-work collaboration.

Objectives:
Based on an accepted understanding of Extended Enterprises (EEs) as dynamic networked organisations a methodology for EE engineering and operation will be developed to support operational EEs. In order to support these processes EE tools and a common EE infrastructure is necessary. To achieve this, the following objectives need to be fulfilled:
- Development of a methodology for EE engineering and operation;
- Development of tools for application of EE methodology;
- Supporting process learning at the level of individuals, teams and organisations;
- Development and deployment of an open knowledge sharing EE infrastructure;
- Developing business solutions from the EE methodology and infrastructure;
- Validating EE methodology and EE infrastructure;
- Ensuring early and continuous exploitation and dissemination of results.

Work description:
EXTERNAL will support process collaboration with embedded knowledge and change management: creating, sharing, harvesting, and reactivating knowledge. This requires development of methods, infrastructure/tools and business solutions for Extended Enterprise modelling, analysis, engineering and operation. The project thus targets the integration and convergence of currently fragmented business process technologies. Using EXTERNAL results, companies can transform and extend their operations through a propose open infrastructure. This allows for the interoperability of dynamic networked partners participating. The project focuses on knowledge intensive service providers.

The core of EXTERNAL is three use-cases. They represent the operation of three actual extended enterprises, one of them being the EXTERNAL project itself. These use cases will early in the project deliver input into the development of an extended enterprise methodology and ensure an applicable extended enterprise infrastructure. Experience dawn from operating the use-cases will give feedback for refinement of the proposed EE methodology, infrastructure and tools. The continuous evaluation of - and the learning from - the use cases will guide EXTERNAL through the challenges met when establishing and operating an extended enterprise. The experience obtained by the project will be disseminated throughout the project and afterwards.

The work is divided into eight work packages:
- WP1: Develop EE methodology;
- WP2: Develop EE infrastructure;
- WP3: Develop EE tools;
- WP4: Use case - EXTERNAL project;
- WP5: Use case - enterprise development;
- WP6: Use case - SME consultancy;
- WP7: Project management;
- WP8: Exploitation and dissemination;
- WP9 Assessment and Evaluation.
