Metropolitan Terabit Optical Ring

Objetivo

The partners in the proposed project will design, develop and demonstrate a tera-bit optical metropolitan area network. An experimental network, which will be based on an optical ring with transmission of 40 DWDM channels at bit-rates up to 40 Gbit/s, will be realised. The developed network will be tested within a field trial, conducted by T-Nova.The optical network will demonstrate the concept of service transparency, enabling transport of various types of services while not requiring a truy optically transparent network. The required functionalities such as: management at the optical layer, performance management, quality of service, protection schemes etc. will be realised. Novel optical add-drop multiplexer configurations, high-speed trasmitters and receivers modules will be designed, fabricated and implemented in the experimental system within the field trial.

Objectives:
The general objective of the proposed project is to design, develop and demonstrate a tera-bit optical metropolitan area network. The optical network will demonstrate the concept of service transparency in optical networks, enabling transport of various types of services. The network will be realised as an optical ring with 40 DWDM channels operating at bit-rates up to 40 Gbit/s. The specific objectives include: Analysis, experimental verification and realisation of WDM channels with 40 Gbit/s transmission. Realisation of: advanced compact OADMs (optical add drop multiplexer) based on a wavelength grouping concept, advanced configurable OADMs and network elements incorporating integrated transponder and OADM cards. In addition a large-scale field trial will be conducted by T-Nova, demonstrating the full operation of the optical network over real installed fibre. An extensive contribution to the emerging recommendations and standardisation bodies activities is planned as well.

Work description:
The work will be carried out as a collaborative effort by a consortium consisting of eight partners with complementary areas of expertise. The consortium includes industrial partners (component and communication systems manufacturers, GIGA and ECI), a large European operator (DTAG/T-Nova) and academic partners with expertise in component technology and high-speed systems (T. U. Delft, T. U. Eindhoven, Technion, COM). Gayton Photonics will act as scientific and technical coordinator. The consortium thus has the necessary expertise to design, fabricate and characterise the components and modules required in the field trial system, which will be configured as a ring with 4 nodes. The network elements at the ring nodes will be assembled from basic modules such as: optical add/drop multiplexers (OADMs) and transponders incorporating 40 Gbit/s transmitters and 40 Gbit/s receivers. The OADMs will exploit a wavelength-grouping concept, enabling both high optical performance and a modular upgradability to a larger number of dropped channels. Analysis and experimental evaluation of NRZ and RZ 40 Gbit/s transmission will be carried out, and the completed system will be comprehensively tested. Significant effort will be devoted to incorporation of all the required network functionalities, such as management at the optical layer, monitoring quality of signal and network protection. Finally, all the required functionalities will tested and demonstrated at the conducted field trail, implementing a full optical network and incorporating all the developed network elements and sub-modules.

Milestones:
The expected result at the end of the project is the demonstration of an optical ring with 4 nodes with a potential capacity of more than 1 Tbit/s, including: demonstration of novel OADM configurations, integrated transponder and OADM cards, network elements with management functionalities. The network will be designed for service transparency, and will be demonstrated within this context at the field trail conducted by T-Nova.
