Advanced SIgnal processing schemes for Link capacity increase in UMTS

Objectif

The current specification of the air interface of UMTS focuses on the use of conventional transceiver algorithms including single antennas at both the base station and at mobile terminals for bitrate up to 2 Mbit/s. However, performances are drastically limited by the multiple access interference. The objective of the ASILUM project is to validate new transceivers concepts, for both base station and mobile terminal, to increase the capacity of the future generation of UMTS through new and efficient interference mitigation schemes. These techniques will be optimally combined to provide innovative improved interference mitigation schemes together with high hardware efficiency. A software-based simulation platform running a number of competitive techniques will be designed, implemented and validated. During all the life of the project, inputs from standardisation bodies will be carefully analysed and at the end of the project, a set of recommendations will be made to standardisation organisms.

Objectives:
A major goal of the ASILUM project is to propose new efficient combinations of interference mitigation techniques taking into account the trade-offs of the various techniques trying to optimise in terms of implementation costs. A simulation platform will be developed and used to assess the performances of the interference mitigation schemes, both at the link and system levels. These simulations will be conducted by taking into account a wideband directional channel model and some hardware implementation constraints. A fair comparison of the alternative schemes will be done in terms of maximisation of capacity of UMTS, in both FDD and TDD modes, versus their implementation complexity. During all the life of the project, inputs from standardisation bodies will be carefully analysed. At the end of the project, a set of recommendations to standardisation bodies will be made to take into account new transceivers and agreed upon channel models for performance evaluation.

Work description:
Starting from promising interference mitigation techniques referred in the literature (space-time processing, beamforming, coding, etc), the participants will develop a link level evaluation platform to implement, in an iterative process, the different techniques, propose some innovative ones, optimally combining them, and eventually perform a fair comparison, using an agreed upon wideband directional channel model, to assess the optimal trade-off between performances and implementation complexity. A system level evaluation platform, brought into the project by ITE, will be updated and improved to evaluate the performance of the schemes in terms of capacity (bit/s/Hz/cell). During the project life, inputs from standardisation organisms will be carefully analysed and active contributions will be made to these organisms to promote new transceiver concepts and wideband directional channel models for performance evaluation. A World Wide Web site will be set up at the beginning of the project and periodically updated to promote and disseminate the work carried out by the consortium.

Programme(s)
