Telematic Support for Patient Focused Distant Care

A prototype of the IMI concept (Integrated Medical Instrument) was developed in the project. The IMI concept is based on a generic hardware platform for intelligent digital sensors, using wireless communication to exchange information with a Local Patient Computer (LPC) It currently supports 4 separate sensors for registration and measurement of ECG, oxygen saturation, pulse, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and non-invasive blood pressure. Software for the IMI and LPC was written to support the data acquisition process for ECG, SPO2 and Temperature. The initial development of a Medical Verification Database for complex interpretation and analysis of the vital signs acquired by the MNI was started. A medical decision support system based on principles of Artificial Intelligence was applied to the interpretation of the ECG data. This system was defined to run on LPC with minimum a Windows 2000 functionality. The sensors defined in the concept provides a set of data necessary in most of the scenarios of health care, spanning from acute care to nursery monitoring. The different market segments will use the in different combinations and in different parts of the healthcare service processes. The project was targeted on advanced home care. This market segment will not be mature for years, but it will have a potential for growth based on local- and national-wide projects. The main challenge to secure dissemination for MedIT will be to combine the best from the sensors and applications we are selling today and the new MNI in the coming product industrialization process. If we manage to combine the input from different user groups into a new flexible product platform, volume sales can be reached at a much earlier stage than aiming only for the home care segment. A new generic software application platform will be developed to cover several market segments and the main segments to start sales will be emergency care and hospitals.
The Mobile Unit is developed in order to provide the needed functionality for a mobile caregiver outside the hospital. The effort related to usability is going to give the product an advantage compared to other mobile units. The extended functionality compared to the mobile units gives the healthcare worker the tool needed to fulfil their job. Based on late reports from WHO the growth in the chronic ill population will increase and the costs related to giving care and treatment to chronic patient groups will explode within a few years. This enormous growth in expenses related to treatment and care of chronic patients creates a demand for the development of new organizational models and supporting technology. The Mobile Unit is designed to cover a small part of these future demands. The Mobile Unit has no major innovative feature, but the wide range of functionality available makes it cover all needs for the mobile caregiver Today's prototype has been developed in order to shorten the way to the market and only minor changes are required in order to start the exploitation commercially.
The local patient computer is developed in order to be easy to use by novice users and still provide the needed functionality. The effort related to user interface design is going to give the product an advantage compared to other home hubs. The extended functionality compared to conventional monitoring equipment gives the technology the chance to cover a market niche within homecare that is growing and that will keep growing the next couple of years. Based on late reports from WHO the growth in the chronic ill population will increase and the costs related to giving care and treatment to these patient groups will explode within a few years. This enormous growth in expenses related to treatment and care of chronic patients creates a demand for the development of new organizational models and supporting technology. The local patient computer is designed to cover a small part of these future demands. The main innovative feature of the local patient computer is the combination of real time monitoring and a broad range of functionality supporting the patient follow-up in their home. Today's prototype has been developed in order to shorten the way to the market and only minor changes are required in order to start the exploitation commercially.
The Control Centre is developed to give an efficient tool for patient administration and patient surveillance. The effort related to user interface design and specially the workflow analyses are going to give the product an advantage. The extended functionality compared to today’s commercial control centre products gives the technology the chance to cover a market niche within homecare that is growing and that will keep growing the next couple of years. Based on late reports from WHO the growth in the chronic ill population will increase and the costs related to giving care and treatment to these patient groups will explode within a few years.
