Access to Scientific Space Heritage

Objetivo

The project will provide the public with insight into astronomy and the concepts of space. This is done by presenting the achievements in European space research and astronomy communicated in an illustrative manner in a virtual Control Room. A lack of knowledge in this area inhibits many people from appreciating the European achievements in space research and astronomy. Especially young people should be inspired to pursue a further interest in science and space research.

Objectives:
To develop and implement a Virtual Control Room to simulate space missions and astronomy events. The Control Room is an illustrative way for the public to gain real life experience with astronomy and the concepts of space and space exploration. In order to find the best way to communicate these difficult concepts the project will address issues of understanding space and astronomy. A highly accessible user interface will also be developed. The user interface will include agents and wizards, 3D object manipulation, high quality sound and lighting effects, video, animations and photographs of European facilities and current events. Furthermore, design and development of the distributed system architecture, simulation models and technology are of special interest to the project. The scientific content will form the basis of a knowledge resource centre available to all.

Work description:
Four technical workpackages constitute the horizontal part of the project models:
- Requirements: Identification of requirements for System and Mission.
- Specification: Spec. and Architecture of the System, storyboard for Mission.
- Implementation: Software development, testing and integration.
- Evaluation: Trial and evaluation of Scenario.

These Workpackages are supported by:
- Project management: Project planning and control, reporting and communication.
- Exploitation: Identification and implementation of exploitation plan. A user group will participate in a workshop where requirements for the application will be identified.

The workshop will also develop a scenario commercial access and knowledge resource reuse. This will form the basis of the exploitation plan completed later in the project. From scientific material, a coherent demonstration programme will be designed and additional content developed, where necessary. The user requirements form the basis for the specification, detailed design and initial prototype development. The prototype will demonstrate the key technologies such as large screen 3D visualisation, virtual object manipulation and team interaction - to be evaluated by the user group to provide practical feedback for the completion of he development. Based on the experience with developing the prototype an initial implementation of the knowledge resource centre with reusable content will be made. The prototype will be further developed based on the comments of the user group and tested before installation in a planetarium. Here it will undergo trials to identify improvements required to improve the user experience expected to be attained. Particular attention will be paid to enabling effective group interactions and to optimising the commercial aspects. During the trial period the exploitation plan will be completed on the basis of the trial results.

Milestones:
Milestones: Delivery of business requirement plan and business implementation plan, user workshops, system specification review, story board review, integration of system and mission.

Expected results:
Project logo, project presentation material, project press files, papers published or presented, public reports, requirements for the control room, specification of system and mission, server implementation, clients implementation, VR user interfaces, final integration of HW/SW and mission, feedback from target group, expert in the area and potential buyers of the control room.
