Advanced MObile VIdeo Communication TEchnologies

Objetivo

The project aims at the development and testing of an innovative GSM-camera allowing live image transmission.

The project is made of two major blocks:
- as to the market side: at the beginning the analysis of the user requirements and the market potential and at the end the definition of a marketing/business plan for the future exploitation strategy;
- as to the technical side: the development of the GSM-based camera starting from an existing "retina-like" camera developed through EU funded projects, making it portable, optimising product performance and reducing production costs through an overall redesign.

Desk and field tests will validate the achieved results.

Objectives:
The technical goals in the development of the new GSM-camera include:
* for the sensor: additional functionalities and standard circuits on board;
* for the camera: case redesign, lens / auxiliary electronics / connections revision;
* for the overall system: design of interfaces camera / GSM and camera / LCD display. From the technical point of view, the major task will be the design of a camera / GSM interface.

From the timing perspective, the longest task will be the upgrade of the chip with additional functionalities due to long fabrication times (not less than 5 months). The business goals (after the successful project completion) are to reach a strong position in the niche of GSM-based video communication, with a sales level around 100,000 units/year (subject to an alliance with a large ICT player).

Work description:
As to the market aspects, the key activities are:
- Analysis of users requirements: identifying the market segments interested in mobile video communication through interviews with "qualified" users/GSM companies;
- Evaluation of market potential: involving an evaluation of the size and the attractiveness of the various market segments;
- Benchmarking: comparing the performance of the new equipment with existing systems without images and with other mobile video communication prototypes;
- Business plan: developing an overall plan (covering marketing, production and distribution) for the commercial exploitation with an estimate of the resources required for the large scale production.

As to the technical aspects, the key activities are:
- Sensor design and manufacturing: exploiting the more recent technologies to reduce the size of the chip and including "on-chip" some pre processing circuits;
- Camera design and manufacturing: redesigning the camera electronics to get a portable device;
- Interfaces design and manufacturing: designing the HW and SW required for connecting and driving with the GSM transmitter and the LCD display;
- Functional evaluations: carrying out desk analysis on the achieved level of performance;
- Producibility evaluation: looking at the easiness and the reliability of the product design with respect to the production process (including an overall value analysis);
- Field test: defining a panel of five qualified users in the targeted market segments that will use the product for a period not shorter than 1 month each and will keep track of their use as to use conditions, expected performance, obtained performance.

Milestones:
The project includes three major milestones:
- at month 5: the completion of the market analysis and of the design specifications, defining the market potential of the initiative;
- at month 13: the completion of the new GSM-camera prototype, achieving the performance and cost targets;
- at month 18: the completion of the tests and the definition of the business plan, validating the technical performance and preparing for the future exploitation.
