Delivery of ITS Applications through Multimedia Over Networks using DAB

Objectif

The aim of DIAMOND is to establish the technical and commercial feasibility of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) services provided over DAB, either as stand-alone or combined with GSM and/or positioning. DIAMOND will define and implement a number of ITS applications provided in different demonstration sites across Europe, supporting the use of DAB and the service providers interested in utilising DAB for ITS services.

Objectives:
ITS already aid a great deal of our travel today: they provide up-to-the-minute info about traffic jams, guide us using automatic navigation systems and tell us when & where the next bus, train etc. is arriving. They alert accidents ahead and provide us with an alternative route, help us book a hotel.
This new world of information relies on efficient communication between the traveller asking for info & those providing the services. A wide range of services can be delivered using the DAB standardised technology. The high capacity allows transmission of text and images (e.g. tv programmes) when travelling at very high speed; it is no longer necessary to change stations when driving abroad and traffic news, news headlines etc. can be displayed in real time on a screen.
The DIAMOND project will develop and improve DAB-based ITS Services. It will prove the technical and commercial feasibility of traffic, travel and tourist services using DAB. In addition to DAB, DIAMOND will integrate positioning technology for location specific services as well as GSM to support personalised services. This powerful combination means delivering multimedia information with interference-free reception in real time, even at high speeds.
Europe leads the world in mobile communications and DIAMOND is putting together the best technologies to deliver intelligent transport systems to people wherever they are. This is a potentially very big market. A joint European Commission/ERTICO study estimated that the European potential for advanced traveller info services, such as in-car navigation and traffic information is 26 billion EURO per annum.
DIAMOND will make sure that people can access this exciting new world no matter where they go. New terminals are being developed for integration into the car, into the PC, for public kiosks & for mobile use. As an added bonus, DIAMOND receivers will be able to access the Internet and download valuable information such as digital maps.

Work description:
DIAMOND is providing the technological basis to show that DAB is particularly suited for ITS applications: it offers mobile reception, it is digital and vehicle manufacturers are now developing multimedia applications for future products.

DIAMOND will therefore:
Optimise the technology platform
The communications technology platform is being optimised for intelligent transport systems. A wide range of ITS services for use in the vehicle, at home, in the office and at kiosks using DAB with or without GSM and GPS will be created. Appropriate exchange formats are being developed to ensure the easy insertion of services. The specification and harmonisation of a Human Machine Interface for intelligent transport systems is an important part of the work so that the public can safely and effectively use terminals. Industry will be supplied with a technical architecture and guidelines on their interpretation and application to make sure all terminals will work with all services. These requirements feed all the other major activities of the project.
Identify winning services
The project will identify those services that are most likely to emerge as winners. User needs are being identified and quantified in order to establish key criteria for the success of future commercial services. A service architecture is the basis for the demonstration sites to develop consistent services. Operational and quality procedures for the commercial services are being developed and fine-tuned in the demonstration sites. A Services Guidebook will ensure easy understanding and exploitation of the results.
Assess the quality of the services
By assessing the impact and the quality of services in the demonstration sites appropriate remedial measures can be devised. These assessments will include the user acceptance and how services affect users' behaviour. Service quality assessment will show that services meet a minimum of quality in the demonstration sites.
Develop a business model
Project results will be disseminated in order to provide convincing evidence of the benefits of DIAMOND. At the same time DIAMOND will support market development and the creation of business chains with the car industry the equipment suppliers and the service providers as main actors. Through a better regulatory framework the profile could be raised of data services compared to audio services - this will provide evidence to regulators to make appropriate additional frequencies available.

Milestones:
An agreed set of technical specifications; A test platform; Technical architecture and guidelines; The API for the HMI with a set of guidelines; A service architecture based on user needs leading to a list of winner choices; Operational and quality procedures; A service guidebook; Evaluation of the project Service quality assessment based on the results emerging from the demonstration project; Develop a business model to enable commercial and technical implementation; Dissemination.
