Objective
The main objectives of the BRAVA project are to significantly enhance the efficiency of film and video-originated archive restoration process and to prepare the restored material for dissemination via multi-resolution digital video broadcasting standards. The efficiency of video programme restoration process will be enhanced through exploiting information obtained from a high-level video analysis tool to control directly an automated restoration system in real-time by providing simple instructions to the real-time equipment, that the user can understand and edit if necessary. The efficiency of video programme restoration process will be enhanced through exploiting information obtained from a high-level video analysis tool to control directly an automated restoration system in real-time by providing simple instructions to the real-time equipment, that the user can understand and edit if necessary.
OBJECTIVES
To develop high-level analysis tools to analyse the image and optimise the restoration process by controlling each of the individual stages used in the restoration;
To develop real-time prior-to-restoration quality analysis software tools for archive material;
To develop a working hardware/software test bed, which will become a prototype system to show and evaluate the equipment and software tools created in the project;
To preserve more of the original film bandwidth to produce restored material suitable for high resolution display;
To significantly improve on current equipment and processes in terms of quality, addressed defects, and processing efficiency;
To integrate audio restoration tools into an existing restoration system, and solutions for sound-of-image restoration, with respect to soundtrack specificities;
To develop software plug-ins for industry standards and test hardware acceleration;
To perform large-scale trials of the resulting system in a restoration environment.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The main project focus will be to significantly reduce the cost of archive restoration, enabling archive holders and programme makers to open up and exploit a wealth of material not previously affordable. A reduction in restoration time will be achieved through the development of algorithms, which are capable of analysing the image and optimising the restoration process by controlling each of the individual stages used in the restoration. The project will develop a prototype that will replace many of the current manual video restoration processes by providing real-time processing of a wide range of defects and will have many automated features to provide restoration at or close to real time operation, hereby meeting the needs of professional archive restorers. This will be realised through the development of new techniques, which will be evaluated on a hardware/software test bed. The project will improve picture quality by maintaining greater detail (bandwidth) of original film archives than is currently achieved and ensure that more of the fine detail in the original picture is processed during restoration, providing the required quality for broadcasting. Large-scale trials with the resulting system will demonstrate that the objectives as described here will result in considerable saving for archive holders and programme makers. Several hours of programme material will be restored at the Users' sites using the developed system, and a complete evaluation of the performance will be made on this occasion.
