Objective
Accelerator-based Radio surgery has been proven as a non-invasive, safe and cost-efficient treatment possibility with a wider range of applications and a lower complication and better survival rate then conventional surgical or Radiation techniques. However, specially trained staff is required to handle treatment planning and treatment procedures within these installations. While the treatment hardware and immobilization devices (frames) need to be available locally (at the treatment site), the treatment-planning set-up (equipment and staff) may be provided by a remote establishment using advanced telematics infrastructure. The objective of the project is to design and develop a Distributed Telematics environment for outsourcing the complete dosimetric treatment-planning procedures.
Objectives:
The aim of this project is to address the clear need for cost-effective and continuous provision of Healthcare services in the area of Accelerator-based Radio surgery, a non-invasive, safe and cost-efficient treatment possibility with a wider range of applications and a lower complication and better survival rate then conventional surgical or Radiation techniques. Specially trained staff is required to handle treatment planning and treatment procedures within these installations. While the treatment hardware and immobilization devices (frames) need to be available locally (at the treatment site), the treatment-planning set-up (equipment and staff) may be provided by a remote establishment using advanced telematics infrastructure. The objective of the proposed project is to design and develop a Distributed Telematics Environment for outsourcing the complete dosimetric treatment-planning using modern telematics tecnologies.
Work description:
The proposed system will be built upon modern trends on the design of distributed environments for computer supported cooperative working. The system will implement the following toolset and functionalities: Tele-Consultancy between physicians for the target definition, Transfer of data between sites (images and other anatomical information), Real time synchronous tele-colaboration between sites for treatment planning, and validation from both sites of the final target definition. The project will address not only technical issues, but also organisational and legal issues related to the proposed new way of collaborative work. Work will follow the typical five cycles of R&D projects, starting with the definition of user needs, definition of functional specifications, design and development of the system, system integration and testing, and finally system validation. Exploitation activities will complement the work to ensure proper preparation for product development and introduction to the European market.
Milestones:
The proposed system is expected to streamline the accelerator-based radio surgery workflow by using modern telematics and CSCW technologies. Though the implementation of the system, and the resulting treatment planning outsourcing, cost-efficiency in radio surgery provision will be achieved. Furthermore, quality of care will be increased through the implementation of such innovative treatment procedures to countries and region that could not financially support such specialized treatment establishments. Thus, new telemedicine services will be implemented and validated in a European level across countries with different healthcare systems, cultures, and financial indices.
