Objectif
Re-configurable Radio Systems and Networks will offer the next major leap forward in mobile and wireless communications, particularly in light of the many existing world-wide air interface standards and the expected wide range of future broadband mobile and personal communication systems. Clearly, re-configurable terminals will offer greatly enhanced flexibility to the end user, supporting all types of radio systems (e.g. paging to cellular, numerous wireless LAN deployments, terrestrial to satellite, peronal communications to broadcasting) as well as enabling the integration of many systems within the same platform. The TRUST project specifically addresses the development of re-configurable terminal platforms from both the 'user friendly prospective' as ell as the underlying enabling technologies.
Objectives:
The Primary Objective of the TRUST Project is to "Realise the User Potential of Re-configurable Radio Systems".
This gives rise to a number of secondary objectives which are:
Understand the Users' Requirements from their perspective of the System:"The Terminal".
Translate these Users' Requirements into Technology Requirements.
Advance the Terminal and Network Technologies through Research and Innovation.
Validate, Promote and Disseminate these Advancements and Technologies.
Work description:
The TRUST Project comprises two phases and five closely inter-related work packages, four of which are technical. The phases of the project are characterised by the definition of requirements, specification and its validation of derived concepts. The technical work packages cross the boundaries between the phases and ensure overall continuity.
The main working fields of the project are:
Evaluation of user need of the re-configurable platform as well as defining the requirements for the system.
Investigation of the subjects of Radio Frequency Architectures and circuits, Baseband architectures, Transceiver algorithms (modulation schemes and protocols), Power Management Scalable Video coding and transmission platforms all in relation to the requirements defined.
Investigation of system aspects of Software Radio. These will include Spectrum Sharing Techniques, System Identification in Composite Radio Environments, Multi-mode monitoring and intelligent mode switching, Radio Resource Allocation for Software Download and its security aspects, and Network support for burst by burst adaptive algorithms at physical layer.
Dissemination of the results from the project by means of workshops and inputs to the standardisation process.
Key Issues
Defining Society and the User needs from Software Radio and translating these into technology requirements.
Using these requirements to define solutions to any technology pitfalls associated with Software Radio.
Validating the developed technology and disseminating any results via workshops, conferences and standardisation fora.

All aspects of the work programme was broadly achieved and in some cases exceeded. The life cycle of Suberites proved complex with no obvious larval production observed in the sponge. Peak settlement times onto the scallops was determined and a possible cause for the settlement pattern obtained. Two cell culture models were developed for Suberites using both isolated cells and primmorphs. Optimised protocols for sponge cell culture were developed. The reproductive cycle for Ecteinascidia was not closed in vitro during the life of the project but was achieved later and large-scale aquaculture production of this species was achieved. Symbionts were localised within Ecteinascidia. There was evidence that they could be maintained in co-culture and that ET-743 activity was still associated with these cell cultures. 156 marine invertebrate species were used for microbial isolation and 264 microbial strains resulted from this. Two anticancer compounds were discovered but both were identified as known compounds. 86 samples of invertebrates were screened directly for anticancer activity and five were found to have activity levels high enough to merit further investigation.
