MAchine Translation systems for the use of Hungarian and Polish Administrations

Resultado final

EC enlargement Hungary and Poland are keenly interested in becoming members of the European Community. As part of the national effort to prepare the countries for admission, the question of harmonisation of the legislative system of the European Community, Hungary and Poland must be solved. This task calls for the translation of the body of European effective legislation into Hungarian and Polish, a task that pauses a great challenge to the public administration.
Translation of EU legislation documents in Hungarian and Polish: Public administrations in Hungary and Poland need technology that could help them to cope with the immense task of translating the massive body of relevant EU legislation documents, which must be disseminated in these two countries in order to enable them to gain membership into the EU.
The result of this software: creation of first version of new generation of translation system: this open system will progressively benefit all existing Systran translation system, bringing declarative, compliance to open format, external maintenance, and scalability.
The Hungarian Academy of Sciences particularly variable will be the multilingual resources developed for this project Matchpad, which will serve as a major asset in future research and development work that HAS may engage in. Indeed, HAS is keen to pursue its line of research in the field of multilingual language technologies, applying the resources and expertise developed in the Matchpad project in answering various practical needs which Hungary's joining of the EU raises.
Polish Universities: The primary interests of Uniwersytet Slaski and Uniwersytet Warszawski are more academic than commercial: their overall goal is to come up with more and more complete descriptions of the natural languages, especially the Polish, from several methodological standpoints, e.g. semantic grammar, discourse grammar, cognitive grammar, but also from a computational and statistical point of view and pays attention to interesting computer applications such as in terminological or automatic translation.
