Objectif
Quality of Service and service differentiation is becoming an increasingly crucial need for Internet Protocol enterprises and private clients and thus for Internet Protocol Network Service Providers. Currently, no commercialised systems help Internet Protocol Network Service Providers to respond to this demand. The QOSIPS project exploits this gap by developing innovative technologies for supporting quality management, service differentiation and price setting of Internet Protocol Network Service Provides. A field experimentation will be performed in controlled conditions for comparing performances in terms of service innovation, volume of sales before and during the experiment. Field experimentation should demonstrate that, within a given set of stratgic constraints (e.g. price positioning, market share), the Internet Protocol Network Service Providers has (a) a better understanding of customer profile/behaviour, (b) an innovative way of generating service differentiation, and (c) more revenues for th user-partner are generated as a result of the use of the QOSIPS technology and methodology.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the QOSIPS project is to develop innovative technologies for supporting Quality of Service (QoS) management, service differentiation & price setting of Internet Protocol Network Service Providers. During the project, the consortium will design, implement, test and evaluate an integrated system (software, hardware and methodology) that performs the following functions:
1. Provide exhaustive, non-intrusive and accurate measurement of real-time QoS of user's traffic packets without injection of test packets in the network;
2. Support customer's profiling (through classification of customer 'real' traffic and use of QoS oriented services) as an innovative way of generating service differentiation;
3. Support the pricing of QoS oriented services such as QoS oriented Service Level Agreement, per application or/and per destination prioritisation, pay-per-use, pay-per-class of service, or global prices packaged per customer type, etc.
In order to achieve these 3 main functions, the architecture tf the QOSIPS system will be composed of 2 main modules: The Quality Module will support measurement and customer's profiling. The Pricing Module will support the price setting process for existing and new innovative services. Interfaces to standard network management systems and billing systems will be proposed.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
As a trade-off between project manageability and management complexity, the life cycle of the QOSIPS project is split up into 7 workpackage (WPs). WP1?s main objectives are (1) to analyse the current QoS, service differentiation and pricing processes, (2) specify the main characteristics of the QOSIPS system and (3) establish in detail the measure and methodology that will be used to assess and evaluate the success of the QOSIPS system. WP2 and WP3 aim at the specification, design, implementation and testing of respectively the Quality Module and the Pricing Module. Both modules will use existing very innovative technologies: the Quality Module will be based on a highly accurate QoS real-time and non-intrusive measurements system which is designed for VPs in enterprises, and the Pricing Module on an intelligent decision support system which is dedicated to the mobile telecommunications market. WP4 brings the Quality and Pricing Modules together for their integration and testing, whereas WP5 focuses on he experimentation and evaluation of the QOSIPS system using the methodology established in WP1. WP6 aims at the dissemination and exploitation of the results of the project. Both dissemination and exploitation begin as soon as possible with for example a web presence and a project presentation datasheet available within the first 2 months and a first research paper based on the results of WP1 planned for month 8. WP7 ensures the project management of the QOSIPS project including the establishment of a good communication workflow and the deliverable of a number of quarterly and progress reports. Using concurrent engineering methodology, overlaps have been created between workpackages with the main objective being to get feedback from the user as soon as possible. The total duration of the project is 21 months because the consortium believes that in a fast moving market such as the telecoms market, systems should be commercialised as soon as possible. The involvement of the Internet Protocol Network Service Provider user partner of the project is crucial all along the project (analysis and them enhancement of his Quality of Service, Service innovation and Price setting processes), feedback at all stages of the project, daily use of the QOSIPS system and measurement of the efficiency and effectiveness of QOSIPS system and methodology.
