Blanking simulation using HPCN technology

Objective

The blanking sector is demanding a new design cycle in which all trials will be computational and not experimental. Blanking is a computational intensive problem, so the use of HPC is recommended. However, this cycle cannot be applied because there are not commercial tools for blanking process simulation. The main aim of BLANKSIM is to transfer the blanking simulation technology into a forging and a sheet metal company, GSB FORJA and DOISTUA, and produce a commercial blanking tool. It will be adapted to run with Parallel Forge3 and installed using the distributed memory PC network of these industries. The new blanking tool could be used by any forging or sheet metal company, where punching or piercing processes are involved.

Objectives:
The main aim of BLANKSIM is to transfer the blanking simulation technology into a forging and a sheet metal company, GSB FORJA and DOISTUA, and produce a commercial blanking tool. For this purpose the following improvements should be done to the prototype developed in SIMTE project:
- Link it with Parallel Forge3, to reduce computational time
- Extend the prototype to cold processes
- Improve the prototype in the following aspects:
a) Elements removal in the cut area
b) Improve the damage model
Additional industrial objectives related with this one are the following:
- To Take up of a blanking HPC tool in a forging and a sheet metal company: GSB FORJA and DOISTUA.
- To assess the potential increment and benefit of GSB FORJA and DOISTUA competitiveness by introducing blanking HPC methodologies into its design phase.

Work description:
In the first Workpackage, WP1 - Management, the overall management activities of the project will be carried out.
In WP2 - Definition of Industrial Requirements, the end user will define the requirement that the simulation tool has to fulfil to deal with all its blanking processes (hot, warm and cold). At this stage, several industrial test cases will also be defined.
The blanking prototype developed by LABEIN will be adapted in WP3 to cope with the industrial requirements defined in WP2. A few technical improvements will also be developed. And finally it will be integrated with Parallel Forge3.
Then in WP4, the new blanking tool will be installed at GSB and DOISTUA and its designer staff will be trained in the system. It will be validated with a real industrial case. In WP5 - Dissemination and Exploitation, dissemination activities will be planned and executed. Also the exploitation of the products generated during the project will be defined in detail.

Milestones:
Milestone 1: Progress Report Month 6. Definition of industrial requirements and test cases. The adaptation of the blanking prototype has started.
Milestone 2: Progress Report Month 12. The adaptation of the blanking prototype has finished. It has been installed at the end user, training has been performed and the industrial test case has started. Dissemination activities have started.
Milestone 3: End of the project. Final Report. The aim of the consortium is to generate a marketable tool for the European blanking sector.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
