Smartcard with USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface

Objective

For comfortable and unhindered e-commerce activities the usual smartcards (as security tokens) are not an optimal solution. Their use requires the availability and use of an appropriate card reader. This results in debates regarding who has to pay for the reader (especially in broad, low cost use). Such a reader is uncomfortable in handling (at least for mobile use) and can obstruct a required serial connector on the PC already used for other devices, or the drivers cannot be loaded. Alternatively, modern information and communication equipment (like PC, Laptops or future mobile phones) have already a fast and easy to use USB connector with the according drivers an SW support. Goal of this proposal is to- add to an existing security smartcard chip a USB interface and the- adaptation of a typical e-commerce and a health care application.- execute a test with a major banking application- execute a test with a health care application

This shall reveal the path to how e-commerce can be much more widely be distributed.

Work description:
The work is oriented on fast deliveries of results, but also to target a high security solution (because of the critical aspects when dealing with electronic money) and getting results out of a broad range of customers and users.

For obtaining fast results, the project will start with a quick turn prototyping phase:L%- Adapting a standard USB controller board as a fast prototype
- Implementing e-commerce software in this token board
- Doing a first pre trial for obtaining initial early results and feedback

The initial results will then be analysed and used for a subsequent specification phase.
At this time the real target module (hardware and software) for the final trial will be customised:
- Adding a USB interface to an existing high security smartcard kernel (which is normally used for banking applications) to full fill e-commerce security applications.
- Porting and adapting the e-commerce software to this platform.
- Performing the target trial and obtaining final results and feedback.

During the entire project schedule a key attribute is the dissemination and distribution task for the concept and system. Additionally getting a wide and prosperous economical distribution and benefit is also a major goal.

Milestones:
M0: Final project management report
M1: Specification + fast prototype available
M2: housed and integrated target chip in token
M3: Test with banking application is done
M4: Test witrh telemedicine/health application is done
M5 Exploitation phase finished
M6: Dissemination phase finished
M7: Evaluation and measurement is done
M4: Results from first pre trial available
M10: Exploitation
M11: Dissemination
M12: Measurement and evaluation of results

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
