User-Based Personalisation of Learning Objectives and Activities in Distance Education through Digital Interactive Television

Objective

This is a take-up action which will conduct trials and complement ongoing actions launched in 4th Framework Programme on Personalised Learning with a re-usable, component-based approach (from ARIADNE) to building systems and services for education and training. The project has also another dimension, which is to conduct these trials on a fully mobile environment, from the perspective of learners, tutors, and administrators. This mobile environment is enabled by the use of interactive Terrestrial Digital Television networks (DVB-T).During the project, distance courses will be re-designed, learning objects developed, web-based distance courses given using the DVB-T networks for broadband performance and mobility of learners and tutors. The work will be thoroughly evaluated and disseminated in order to best exploit the results. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this project is to conduct trials concerning:* the use of open architectures (from the ARIADNE project) for re-usable, component based, learning objects in distance learning, leading to an increased re-usability of learning objects, and access to knowledge pools of learning objects across Europe and internationally.* validation of the use of cost-effective, interactive Terrestrial Digital Television (DVB-T) in distance learning, also allowing mobility of learners and tutors. And thus, provide means to deliver it to a far higher proportion of the population than at present; * contribution to the wider acceptance of concepts, standards, tools and open architectures for re-usable and component based learning environments, and thereby break barriers to exploitation;

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The business case is to offer distance courses with emerging methodology and technology, i.e. the ARIADNE platform and tools for re-usable learning objects. Four courses have been designed in which the full life cycle of a course is reflected. This life cycle starts with course development (or rather, re-design of existing courses) and ends with examination and certification. The courses reflect a diversity in level and content. The main elements of the UPLOADED IT project include: * A definition of user needs, necessary to identify the educational outcomes and processes expected from the project, and to ensure that the project is soundly based in an understanding of learners' characteristics and needs. * A set up of the learning platform, i.e. the concepts and tools of the ARIADNE project, and the set up of the broadband communication platform to be used (DVB-T);* Re-designing courses according to the ARIADNE platform and the emerging standard for meta data, in order to meet the project objectives; * Giving the courses, using existing or redesigned course materials and the ARIADNE platform. This will be accompanied by gathering of appropriate metrics for the evaluation.* An evaluation of the outcomes of the trials compared to the objectives. This will give the basis for carrying out a full-scale deployment and exploitation.* Dissemination of the results of the trials both to general and targeted audiences, with a view to encouraging exploitation of re-usable learning objects, new learning platforms, and the DVB-T based Internet access.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
