Best Practise experiment for Co-Simulation Backplanes

Objetivo

The COSIBA best-practise experiment will formulate a co-simulation backplane for coupling EDA tools, that supports co-design using various specification formalisms at different abstraction levels. The aim is to explore the best-practise use of commercially available tools, with respect to the internal needs of two telecom houses, INTRACOM and ALCATEL.The project will resolve the interoperability problems between the tools for system level design, that are currently being used by both companies. Precisely it will provide the necessary modules and links to achieve the interconnection between tools such as SDT, ObjectGEODE, ARMulator and CoWare. COSIBA will measure the improvements achieved with the co-simulation backplane, using specific evaluation critera, in two experiments from the system developments of the telecom houses.

Objectives:
The COSIBA best-practice experiment brings together two major telecom houses, INTRACOM and ALCATEL, by taking advantage of their common need for system development through the use of more than one specification languages. The key point of the COSIBA project is the exploitation of the know-how of both companies, and the concurrent use of existing tools that describe system parts using languages with varying degrees of abstraction. For instance, the joint use of SDL, C and VHDL in a single system model is ntt feasible in the current companies' practises. By exploiting the APIs of tools currently used by Intracom and Alcatel, the development of the co-modeling backplane will allow the reduction of time-to-market while increasing the final product quality, thrgugh the use of IP components and reusable subsystem blocks.

Work description:
The work carried out in the COSIBA best practice experiment is divided in three workpackages:WP1 - Co-specification backplane: The work to be carried out starts with the evaluation of the current status, both in the industry and the academia. The actual goal is to get acquainted with existing co-design methodologies, and identify the degree to which they support co-specification using different languages. Special attention will be paid to the commercial tools and their APIs for the support of coupling wih external tools. The final goal is the implementation of a backplane that will allow tool coupling for system co-specification.WP2 - Telecom experiments and assessment for best practice: This workpackage defines the experiments that will be used in the OSIBA project. The backplane developed in WP1 will be utilised for the development of the applications of INTRACOM and ALCATEL. Finally, the experience gained from the use of the developed backplane will be used for the evaluation of the development proces.WP3 - Management and dissemination: The objective is to establish the infrastructure for management and monitoring of the work to be carried out by the entire project. Additionaly, it will coordinate the dissemination of the projects achievements.

Milestones:
COSIBA experiment includes two milestones:- M1, at T0+12, that identifies the operational backplane for the tools coupling- M2, at T0+18, which involves the best practice experiment results.
