Medical Microinstruments

Objetivo

The objectives of COMBIOENV are to provide expertise in technology and implement means to facilitate the access to MST of specific user communities active in two industrial sectors: biomedical and environmental (focused on human health). The Proposer will offer advanced technologies and scientific competence, comprising ultra-precision machining and 3D microfabrication, and modelling, simulation, and design capabilities. Additional services useful to transform prototype concepts into marketable products will be offered to the users by networking with the main R&D centres and MST industrial manufacturers. The MST take-up process will be managed, analysed, evaluated using suitable indicators, and progressively improved by means of an efficient and agile management structure. Finally, the optimised methodology will be retained and exploited by the Proposer for self-sustained continuation of the access action beyond the COMBIOENV Project.

Objectives:
The objectives of COMBIOENV are to provide expertise in technology and implement means to facilitate the access to MST of specific user communities active in two industrial sectors: biomedical and environmental (focused on human health). The take-up of MST by the target users will allow the development of new products, processes and services, thus increasing the innovation capabilities and the competitiveness of the European industry (particularly SME) in the specific sectors. The Proposer has scientific and technical competence in MST and in the biomedical and environmental sectors, and expertise in methods to overcome obstacles hindering MST take-up. These methods will be exploited to offer services to an identified subset of customers within the target user communities. To achieve the objectives of the Project, the Proposer will add to his own advanced technologies and competence, through networking the design capabilities and manufacturing facilities available in Europe through networking. The Proposer will act as a competence centre with a strong problem solving, application-pulled attitude, aiming at proactively contacting potential users, interpreting their needs, and providing the best possible services using MST.

Work description:
The COMBIOENV Project requires an effective methodology and an adequate management structure. According to the experience acquired by the proposer, an effective workplan should include:
a) contacts with potential users, primarily in the target user communities;
b) analysis of the best match between user needs and MST based solutions;
c) design and supply of customised services to the users, together with appropriate assistance and accompanying measures;
d) analysis and improvement of the effectiveness and yield of the take up process;
e) acquisition of the optimised methodology and exploitation of results by the Proposer for self-sustained continuation beyond the Project.

Proactive contacts will include:
direct contacts;
Web page;
publications;
introduction by other CCs and MCs.
Personal contacts will be preferred. Knowledge of sectors and technical results obtained by the Proposer in the development of micro instrumentation for minimally invasive surgery and therapy, of neural and limb prosthetics, and of instrumentation for fluid analysis, will be used to focus contacts and as proof of capability. Introducing innovative technologies in medical and environmental products is hindered by many factors.

COMBIOENV will devote specific efforts to overcome these factors, by offering the user (particularly SME) assistance on:
scientific and technological development in the biomedical and environmental fields;
multidisciplinary problems;
competition;
intellectual property;
regulatory issues;
interactions with medical communities and with agencies;
marketing strategies;
cost factors, etc.

The Proposer will offer specific technologies and competence, comprising ultra-precision machining and 3D microfabrication, and modelling, simulation, and design capabilities. Additional services useful to transform prototype concepts into marketable products will be offered to the users by networking with the main R&D centres and MST industrial manufacturers. Dedicated training courses will be offered to the user as an accompanying action to the MST take up process. The overall process will be managed, analysed, evaluated using suitable indicators, and progressively improved by means of an efficient and agile management structure. Finally, the optimised methodology will be retained and exploited by the Proposer for self-sustained continuation of the access action beyond the COMBIOENV Project.

Milestones:
The results of COMBIOENV will include:
.success cases of MST industrial take up;
.increased awareness of MST capabilities in the biomedical and environmental sectors;
.services methodology for effective take-up of MST.
Measures of success will be based on indicators:
.at least 60 personal contacts with users, in at least 5 European countries;
.at least 10 contracts; generated revenues for the Proposer at least 4 times Project funding;
.at least 3 customised training courses;
.at least 1 new company created in the targeted sectors.
