Objective
The objective of the POS.IT project is to trial the use of GSM Cell ID positioning and WAP in applications for the area of fast courier transport. POS.IT intends to demonstrate the cost and quality effectiveness of an innovative use of a cheap and extended technology. One of the services will be for fleet management, which includes a mobile positioning system to help courier companies locate their vehicles and personnel and distribute new tasks/deliveries more effectively. Other services provide delivery control, which will help plan and manage the assignment of delivery tasks, and electronic payment, which will allow clients to pay the deliveries over the mobile phone.
Work description:
The work of the project will be based on a positioning solution (Cell ID) for locating the position of a vehicle via a mobile phone and monitoring and visualizing the vehicle in a map and obtaining information related. In addition, messages can be exchanged to assign new tasks to be carried out within the area the vehicle is in. Delivery acceptance will also be available for personnel to inform when a delivery or pick-up has been carried out successfully and electronic payment to allow delivery payment via the mobile phone. The system will combine a GSM mobile phone positioning system to obtain the position of the vehicles and a GIS to display the information related. Users will be able to visualize their vehicles and obtain information related. Nowadays satellite-based GPS technology is the most extended solution for vehicles positioning and GSM is a well-proved technology but not in this type of applications. The system will also include WAP applications to allow drivers to communicate with the coordinator/manager to inform of a delivery status and to allow clients to pay the delivery over the mobile phone. The trial application is aimed to the transportation sector and sales and service organizations that need a more efficient method to plan the distribution of resources. The use of GSM instead of GPS technology implies low investment since many companies have mobile phones.
Milestones:
Expected results:
Test of services based on GSM for the Courier Sector: Positioning system, Delivery acceptance and Payment using GSM.
Milestones:
