Trial of a sheet stamping simulation system in the aluminium packaging and aerospace sectors

Objective

The objective of the project is to adapt a software program aimed at simulating the sheet stamping processes for steel panels within the automotive sector in order to diversify it for the simulation of the deep drawing of aluminium products destined for the monoblock packaging and aeronautics industries.
The benefits for the targeted sectors will be:
1. Make their development and/or production cycles more efficient by using a software tool
2. Increase the quality and economic viability of the products;
3.Enhance their design of the product and production cycle.
The final outcome of the trial can be summarised as a validated software system containing unique capabilities simulation for the targeted sectors.

Work description:
The project provides for an identification stage during which end-users can define their short-term and long-term aims within the project. In the short-term the software will be installed within each company, training will be provided and initial trial will begin. This phase will require help from suppliers in order to address the needs of the end-users. This period is also intended as a testing/evaluating ground for the end-users in order to identify more adequately the shortcomings and problems of simulation software related to the manufacture of aluminium cans and aerospace components. Overlapping the initial trial period is WP3, which provides a frame for the end-users to clearly specify their requirements in order to define clearly how the software needs to be adapted. Following these definitions the adaptation of the simulation software can begin in WP4, allowing some initial overlap with the evaluating and definition periods. As soon as WP2 and WP3 are completed, the end-users will be able to start testing the first versions of the adapted software, thereby maintaining the continuous testing. This trial of the adapted versions of simulation software takes place during WP5, which is made as lag as possible giving the end-users adequate time for proper evaluation and testing. It is noted that software adaptations are rarely a linear process and provision is therefore made in WP5 to allow an iterative development process allowing the end-users to test and make comments so that the developers can improve the software design, structure and helpfulness for the end-users. Some dissemination will be started in WP6, together with the start of the trial period since it will be known at this stage if all the objectives are obtainable or not. The major dissemination will really be done during the second part of the project, since results will have been obtained and information relevant to the targeted industrial sectors will be available

Milestones:
1) A validated software system containing unique capabilities simulation of the targeted sectors,
2) A software system that is commercially viable to a broader range of industrial sectors,
3) Dissemination of the project results via trade fairs, congresses, articles in trade magazines, etc.,
4) An updated and broader marketing and sales strategy for the resulting software,
5) Improved business prospects for end users due to better quality products and more efficient production
