The result of the project is an optimisation environment/portal that is available to potential end users in the form of an extended Application Service Provider (ASP) solution. Application Service Providers rent the use of business applications - using the Internet or other low cost communication infrastructure - to offer organizations quick, cost effective, and immediate use of strategic business solutions. The ASP owns the customer relationship for implementing, customising, out-hosting and maintaining business applications for multiple end-user organizations and charge on a pay as you go basis. By adopting the ASP model, and by adding further value to it in the form of optimisation-based, customisable analytic engines, an enhanced ASP model is defined. This is called an Optimisation Service Provider (OSP).
The definition of OSP claims the following innovations:
- Uncertainty-based optimisation models that capture realistic environments and thus have a significant impact in short and long term planning and allocation of resources (in contrast to deterministic applications.)
- Progressive and flexible" modelling of cross-sector and sector-wide features leading to solutions that easily adapt in the dynamic environments of modern organisations.
- User-centred application specific interfaces encouraging use of optimisation for decision support by non-technical users.
-Integrated Optimisation and ASP solutions that can co-exist and integrate with existing organisational IT infrastructure components, such as data warehouses, data marts, and desktop applications.
- Re-usable models which support rapid deployment of optimisation solutions for a range of applications.
- Experience based OSP training packages that allow users to fully exploit the efficacy of the OSP approach.
With OSP SMEs from around the world, can utilise high performance decision-making tools, while at the same time minimising costs on budget, staff, and resources. Non-expert consultants and organisations can provide their customers with best of breed optimisation based solutions leaving the task of dealing with the inherent complexity and sophistication of analytical decision support application to the OSP portal.
With OSP large multinationals do not need to maintain the necessary infrastructure, nor to find, hire, and retain IT professional for managing such applications. Instead the organisations can focus on their value-added business model. Ongoing support, maintenance, backup, and upgrades of the applications can be channelled through the OSP, thus increasing security, reliability, flexibility, and manageability.
Through the development of a quality training programme and that of a high quality professional support personnel in optimisation based DSS the project expects to achieve considerable market recognition as a high end player in this niche market sector. The aim is to charge industry standard but high-end software price and service fees, and become widely acclaimed purveyor of quality products and services.
