Satellite-UMTS IP-based Network

Objetivo

Project SATIN aims to investigate several new Satellite UMTS architectures that provide a range of new and complimentary packet based services to the terrestrial component of the UMTS. SATIN provides a fresh view as to the role of satellites within the overall UMTS design by focusing attention of using the satellite component as an effective and efficient access network for delivery of a wide range of packet-based and point-to-multipoint services. Based on the above architecture, SATIN will produce an optimised layer-1 and layer-2 design with full integration into the terrestrial UMTS core network in mind.

Objectives:
Efficient support of Internet-based applications to mobile/nomadic users is a key feature of the 3G Networks. In light of the shortages and the high cost of the T-UMTS spectrum, the operators are looking into provision of integrated broadcast/multicast services through hybrid broadcast-UMTS systems. S-UMTS could play an important role in efficient delivery of some UMTS services to which it is better suited. These services include broadcasting & multicasting applications such as audio/video, e-newspaper, live stock exchange data, etc.

In doing so, SATIN will follow three main objectives:
1-Introduction of new packet-based S-UMTS architecture as an integral part of the UMTS.
2-Definition and optimisation of the packet mode S-UMTS layers 1 & 2.
3-Active participation and contribution to the standardisation in particular the ETSI & the 3GPP.

Work description:
Project SATIN is an in-depth research and technology project. During the course of the project a number of new packet-based S-UMTS architectures would be studied. The requirements placed up on the S-UMTS access network by the UMTS core network will be considered paving the way for full integration with the T-UMTS for efficient delivery of a series of packet based services. Based on the proposed architecture, a detailed description of an optimised Layer 1 and 2 will be produced.

Layer-1: Various aspects of the packet mode W-CDMA access scheme will be optimised in realistic satellite communication environments. Amongst these, fast acquisition, synchronisation, adaptive and predictive power control, and advanced receivers specifically designed for packed based communications would be investigated.

Layer-2: Definition and optimisation of the MAC layer and resource management for the packet mode of S-UMTS will be considered within the framework of this activity. Maximising the overall system capacity whilst achieving the required end-to-end QoS is ultimate goal of this work. Both the layers would be optimised and evaluated considering full compatibility with UTRAN whilst aiming for maximum air interface commonality to allow dual-mode T/S-UMTS terminals.

Milestones:
SATIN is expected to introduce a novel concept for the satellite component of UMTS. The project will define an efficient method for delivery of a range of "push" (multicast) services for UMTS. Based on these S-UMTS architectures, SATIN will produce a comprehensive layer-1 & 2 specification. SATIN will actively participate in the S-UMTS standardisation process by making several major contributions to ETSI and 3GPP. SATIN aims to act as the driving force for standardisation of S-UMTS.
