Objective
The objective of this proposal is to add and integrate biometrics into a standard smartcard for secure and comfortable authentication and identification. Interoperability of the integration will be an important objective in those applications. Biometric smartcard integration will be performed at different levels resulting in a system with higher security and privacy than existing solutions may provide. The proposal will contain all the biometrics and security related mechanisms: Sensor-on-Card
Work description:
For the realisation of a complete secure biometric smartcard system like Finger_Card we will integrate all the required parts onto a single card:
- A one chip silicon fingertip-sensor on the card will act as the biometric sensor.
- For integrating this large silicon chip into a smartcard, the adaptation and application of a new thinning technology for large silicon chips shall be used and enhanced.
- We will use an advanced, next generation smartcard processor (32Bit) as the kernel because it contains most of the required processing and security features.
- Integrated crypto coprocessors allow fast and also secure cryptographic processing of sensitive and critical data. The required biometric algorithms together with the smartcard type security functions will be programmed on the matching processor.
The functionality and performance of the developed system will be tested with different applications to get an operational feedback:
- e-commerce
- health care
- access control
- data security and encryption.
The results of the tests will be collected and published. Special activities will be done for dissemination and distributing the project's information.
