Proof of concept for a simple, workable and manageable interoperable solution for door-to-door travel based on chip-card

Objetivo

To date, interoperability of Multi-Application smart-card based systems is only emerging as a concept No field experiment has brought forward the possibility of fully testing and demonstrating the viability of the designed interoperable schemes. This proof of concept will be made in two steps: a laboratory test and a test within a more general card experiment run within some of the partners.

Objectives:
The objective of TRIANGLE is to bring a proof of concept for a simple, workable and manageable interoperable solution for door to door travel (bringing together payment, ticketing and access to services), using existing technology and/or installed infrastructures. This solution is based on smart card technologies that allow to host on chips transport tickets or other applications such as electronic purse and access to services. TRIANGLE will be compatible with ongoing programmes from the partners and professional institutions. This proof of concept will involve 3 cities (Brussels, London and Paris) and the International rail service that link them. Ticketing applications as well as electronic purse applications must be interoperable. CEPS (Common Electronic Purse Specification), EMV (Eurocard-Mastercard-Visa), CALYPSO and IOPTA (InterOperable Public Transport Architecture) have already paved the way towards this objective. TRIANGLE will fuel this standardisation process by contributing with experimented technical proposals.

Work description:
TRIANGLE builds on the complementary experience and competence of its partners as well as on a structured organisation:The work is divided in 9 workpackages.
It starts with an effort of pooling the experience and knowledge of the various partners in terms of requirements and multiservice constraints, with a focus on the business operation of a future TRIANGLE system. This implies a particular attention to the following issues, which will be kept throughout the whole work:
- interoperability
- Contactless CEPS demonstration platform- Communication between CEPS and other relevant standardisation initiatives
- distribution
- Management of money and tickets
- Legal issues
- Interaction between payment and transport
- After-sales
- Market Assessment
- Segmentation
- Added-value for customers and operators
- Co-branding - Commercial rules
This will lead to the functional specifications of a TRIANGLE system. The practical and technical work of developing the material for the proof of concept (technical specifications, design of the TRIANGLE mask and production of cards) will then be implemented.
The proof of concept itself will be made in two phases:
- A laboratory evaluation
- A test within a more general card trial
The results of TRIANGLE will then be analysed and disseminated to the interested community through internet, a workshop including the professional bodies, the standards organisations and the interested operators and public authorities.

Milestones:
TRIANGLE will define a development platform for Multi-Application integration, allowing to cover door-to-door activities in an international environment. The integration of epurse application and ticketing applications will benefit from a true interoperable interface dealing integrating security.
