Ubiquitous and Integrated Teamwork Environment

Objetivo

UNITE aims to offer project teams and virtual organisations user-friendly, highly efficient co-operative workplaces that pervasively, dynamically, securely and transparently bind project context information with team members, their physical workplace and own information tools. It will elicit the requirements and paradigm of co-operative workplaces, define a suitable platform architecture, validate concept and architecture with prototypes operated with real project teams, and ensure high visibility of results for dissemination, and exploitation, primarily through its industrial and user partners, and standardisation bodies. UNITE's approach implements the vision of ambient intelligence and supports EU policies in competitiveness, employment, social cohesion, sustainability, and interoperability. The project lifecycle comprises 4 phases: solution concept, basics, plat form, enhanced platform, and consolidation. UNITE is structured into 9 work packages: WP1 identifies and analyses relevant scenarios and elicit requirements, defines the trials, and evaluates UNITE co-operative workplaces. WP2 ensures high-visibility of project results, and co-ordinates dissemination and exploitation of these results. WP3 has overall responsibility for development of the platform, including system and security architectures, and system development. WP4 to WP8 develop system components for 1) the integration of communications and collaboration services, physical resources, and people in the co-operative workplaces, 2) the customisation of the virtual workplaces, and 3) the user interface. WP9 will ensure management and coordination of the project activities. Requirements: the first stage of elicitation of the business process requirements and the paradigm of co-operative workplaces results from the review of the state of the art and discussions among the project members. The second stage builds on the trials and further review of the state of the art. Architecture: a fully distributed architecture of the platform is defined. It uses open standards, widely used technologies, and emerging components. Prototypes: three versions were developed as a proof of concept of the architecture. The third version consolidates the results gained from the first two versions. Evaluation: the approach addresses usability and effects on team members, teams and organisations, and cost/benefit ratios associated with the introduction of UNITE technology. The prototype has been deployed for use by a team of geographically dispersed consultants conducting their project, and evaluated. The evaluation results were fed back to the next version of the requirements, architecture and specifications, and prototype development.
