Network of Excellence On Nanoelectronics

Objective

Phantoms builds on a former network that pioneered the set-up of the European nanoelectronics community since 1993. The new network will bring together more than 100 European research groups that are active in the areas of nanoelectronics, molecular computing and nanofabrication. It will provide a platform for the development of common research strategies, the exchange of ideas and research results, the coordination of training activities, and for the networking of nanofabrication facilities and tools. Furthermore, Phantoms' mandate includes the co-ordination of work under the Nanotechnology Information Devices proactive initiative and the road mapping of research well into the 21st century.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of Phantoms is to:
- Foster the exchange of knowledge between research groups working in the different fields related to nanoelectronics and nanotechnology (in the public and private sector);
- Increase collaborations between universities, research institutions and private and public companies;
- Identify scientific priority areas in emerging technologies and thereby assist in the formulation of research and development strategies;
- Facilitate discussions and act as a link between "Nanotechnology Information Devices" projects;
- Collect information in order to prepare the European Nanoelectronics Roadmap in collaboration with the European Commission;
- Strengthen existing contacts with European manufacturing companies;
- Promote intensively industrial participation in the Network activities informing the industry about relevant progresses in nanoelectronics and providing a feedback loop for industrial mid and long-term interests;
- Allow European groups working on related nanoelectronic fields to present their research either through the network WEB site or at the network Workshops;
- Manage grants for short visits to other labs;
- Develop initiatives to retain qualified young scientists and engineers within Europe in the area of nanoelectronics by taking them aware of job opportunities, grants.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The PHANTOMS coordination efforts will be focused on a selected range of R&D activities, which are expected to strategically impact on future developments in the nanoelectronics domain and their long term applications. The network will address several areas of scientific study, which may yield novel, exploitable electronic devices and systems such as Modelling, Lithography, Nanoimprint/Micro contact Printing, Architecture, Nanoprobes, Silicon/Industry, Superconductors, Magnetoelectronics, Molecular and Bioelectronics, Nanoscale Optics, Self-assembly/combination of Silicon technology and molecular based electronics. One of the key aspects to develop emerging technologies is to promote the interaction between scientists.

Phantoms will contribute to this by:
a) Exchange of information during workshops which may be related to specific topics mentioned above. Although the workshops will be open to everyone, the number of participants will be limited to guarantee a strong interaction between participants;
b) Scientific exchange between partners by research visits of scientists between the partners and student grants;
c) A web based database on the work on Nanoelectronics available for members and non-members of the network.
