LAUNDRY Application Using RFID tags for Enhanced Logistics

Objetivo

LAUREL aims at developing a RF ID tag system with multi-read capability and very small read/write RF tags. LAUREL will achieve a never reached cost/performance level. Computer simulation will be used to optimise RF system design, to predict reading performance, support compliance with RF regulations and facilitate adaptation of LAUREL to various applications. LAUREL targets industrial mass-market applications. Tag packaging, antenna and chip embedding will be designed to meet the needs of mass-production of very low-cost items of 100s of million units per year. The LAUREL tag technology will be validated in a linen identification and tracking system for the laundry industry. It will be generic and adaptable to other application needs e.g. supply chains, courier/parcel delivery, medical applications. The consortium includes a leading tag manufacturer, a research institute, a system integrator and an end-user.

Objectives:
LAUREL aims at developing an RF ID tag system with multi-read capability and very small RF tags with read/write memory while achieving a never reached cost / performance level. LAUREL targets industrial mass-market applications which have clearly identified immediate needs and for which cost benefit can be reached rapidly. The tag packaging, antenna and chip embedding, will be designed to meet the needs for mass-production of low-cost items of 100s of million units per year. Successful introduction of LAUREL in the laundry industry will provide the critical mass required to cut tag production cost and facilitate penetration into other markets. Computer simulation will be used to optimise RF system design, to predict reading performance and support compliance with international RF regulations. The LAUREL tag technology will be validated as a part of a linen identification and tracking system for the laundry industry with a hospital laundry.

Work description:
Based on specifications covering the different technical components of the LAUREL RF ID technology and its application specific implementation, the following developments will be carried out:
- A RF ID tag system. The RF tag / reader couple design will be optimised to support tag multi-read operations. The targeted features include the 13.56 MHz band (the emerging SC31 standard), a 8W reader and a tag diameter smaller than 25 mm.
- The RF ID tag will be packaged into a laundry resistant hard plastic packaging. A very small (about 1.4 mm2) tag chip will be used which will feature anti-collision protocols and a 40-bit on-chip R/W memory.
- The RF tag reader will have a powerful analog and digital signal processing capability to compensate for the low signal level of the low-cost tags. The use of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology in the reader demodulation module will allow the system performance to be optimised.
- The LAUREL RF ID tag technology will be integrated in a linen identification and tracking station (ITS) designed for the needs of the laundry industry. The LAUREL solution will be evaluated in field tests in a real application environment with end-users.

Milestones:
M1 (t0+2months): LAUREL specifications,
M2 (t0+10months) LAUREL draft exploitation plan,
M3 (t0+14months): RF simulation report,
M4 (t0+15months): LAUREL RF ID tag, tag reader, software and hardware.
Performance targets of:
. Multi-read of 50 soiled linen items in a laundry bag in 5 seconds
. Reading accuracy close to 100%
. Capability to write 40 bits of application specific information into a RF ID tag
. Tag packaging resistant to the usual laundry environment,
M5 (t0+16months): LAUREL linen identification and tracking system,
M6 (t0+18months): End-users evaluation
