Providing trustable information context and implementation support for weight control

Objective

The objective of WEIGHT-INFO is to provide the citizen with an easily and from everywhere accessible, integrated environment where any weight related issue is targeted in a personalised effective manner from the citizen point of view. The work programme is constituted of 11 work packages, dealing both with the construction of a reliable information environment (certified by medical organisations) and with the realisation of easily accessible online services, customised to deal with different user profiles, needs and weight problems. The usage of portable phones and other new communication devices will be taken into consideration in the system design and implementation.

Objectives:
The aim of WEIGHT-INFO is to provide citizens, particularly those predisposed to overweight and obesity, with an easily and from everywhere accessible, integrated environment where any weight related issue is targeted in a personalised effective manner from the citizen point of view. The environment will provide trusted, personalised information, will support decision taking in order to improve a given style of life, will monitor the overall implementation of the taken decision.

The main objectives can be summarised as follows:
Provide trustable context to the information;
The system should be able to select trustable information to be offered to the user; in addition the selected information will be customised per category of people, according to specific profiles, up to the level of individuals;
Provide certified individualised advice to citizens to help them making informed choices about their style of life -this will include, for example, an effortless self-assessment of the weight status and advice for improvement-;
Provide services to help the citizen in implementing their choices;

A complete class of services can be implemented, such as: Links to e-commerce services for relevant products in sectors such as nutrition, health related tourism (e.g. SPAs), physical exercise, etc.; Support the search of appropriate products and services while travelling, based on the use of emerging communication technology, like GPRS and UMTS; Services for monitoring recommended lifestyle changes, such as early detection of critical values for previously healthy citizens or the monitoring of at-home follow-up of patients back from hospital care.

Work description:
The objective of WEIGHT-INFO is to provide the citizen with an easily and from everywhere accessible, integrated environment where any weight related issue is targeted in a personalised effective manner from the citizen point of view.

Given this goal, the following requirements can be identified:
- System accessibility and availability
- User friendly interactions
- User customisation of the services
- Dynamic user profile definition
- Customised search of already available information
- Customised provision of advice
- Support and monitor the decided activity implementation
- Certification of food and health related goods/services providers.
The above listed requirements will be transformed in "operational objectives", i.e. functional specifications and general system architecture.
This will be done by completing the 10 work packages of the project, each dealing with a particular implementation phase.
The whole implementation process will be subject to:
WP7: User Group directions and indications and
WP9: Quality Assurance that will guarantee the quality of the system
WP1: User Requirements and State of Art will provide an overall description of the WEIGHT-INFO concept, the identification of the different classes of actors, the identification of parameters for user profiling, information indexing, certification of goods and services. A state of the art review will be carried out as well on available background technology
WP2: System Specification and Design will define system architecture and functional specifications
WP3: System Implementation and Testing will prepare an empty demonstration prototype to be populated during the pilots
WP4: Pilot Set-up, will prepare the pilot environment
WP5: Demonstration and validation will be the operational test of the system by the end users
WP6: System refinement will adjust any issue coming from the demonstration and validation phase
WP8: Exploitation and Dissemination will put in place a dissemination plan in order to provide as much visibility as possible to project results
WP10: Project Management will ensure the system goals achievement.

Milestones:
The project main milestones refer to the different phases and work packages. First user and system specifications will be produced, then the system prototype platform will be established and refined, after this step 4 Pilots will be set up and populated with relevant information and the user database will be filled. The 4 Pilots will then test the system by means of their local user groups and finally the test results will be validated and effective platforms will be set-up for release to extended use. Then the WEIGHT-INFO platform will be released.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
