MetaCampus for life-long learning

Objectif

In addition to the expected outcomes of MetaCampus, during the course of the project the partners saw the need, to better serve real market demands and real end-user needs, to develop a competency model that could effectively link, intelligently, learning objects (resources), real Learning Citizens (learning preferences and needs) and real workplace descriptions of jobs (competencies). The development of the competency model was integral to the interrelated development of the Learning Content Assembler, Learning Resource Catalogue, and the Training Consultant. This competency model is conformant to SCORM and IEEE-LOM metadata standards, and its specification is detailed in the result 7 "Metadata and Competency" of this TIP. MetaCampus Marketplace is the working prototype that demonstrates the interaction of the individual modules developed for the platform where transactions between customers and sellers will take place, including the default user interface. Key interactions of the technical achievements for the Learning Citizen and Learning Content Providers include: Learning Resource Catalogue (LRC) is the database that defines all the learning resources for the needs of the Training Consultant, the Learning Content Assembler, Authentication Broker, and Back Office.

A Learning Citizen can choose to browse the catalogue or search for resources using a free browse or multi-criteria search (by subject, language, cost, duration, resource provider etc.). For Learning Resource Providers, the LRC provides a standards conformant template for the identification and retrieval of learning resources of various levels of granularity, type, presentation, media, language, etc Authentication Broker (AB) is the module in charge of granting security for the whole system. It focuses on certification and registration processes and on providing a single sign-on authentication platform for the MetaCampus e-learning community, making this a transparent process. The end user has to register to use the more advanced, personalized services in the marketplace, and subsequently enters using the user-friendly single sign on procedure. For the Learning Resource Provider, the AB allows secure access to offer, manage and sell (via E-payment technical achievement) their products in the marketplace. Special attention has been paid to creating a solution that does not violate the security requirements of the service providers.

The User Data Base (UDB) is the database with information on the Learners and is accessed by all the modules. The Authentication Broker, the Training Consultant, the Data Mining and Processing System and Learning Content Assembler also interact with the UDB. Learning Content Assembler (LCA) MetaCampus works with a high level of granularity of resources, and can propose to the Learner resources to complement a course or part of a course through the LCA function, in which components, such as additional exercises, are bundled together to form a new, individualized resource. LCA is an internal module within the MetaCampus architecture that communicates with the user through the Basic Processing module, using the presentation layer to exchange information. Training Consultant (TC) is the module that provides suggestions on the best-fitting resources to a given end user. Its work is based on the knowledge of the user (declared and inferred) drawing on the User Data Base, the Learning Resource Catalogue, on its own static expertise (the Training Consultant Expertise Data Base), and finally, on a solution searching strategy (embedded inference engine). For Learning Content Providers, the Training Consultant has different applications and agents available such as Data Mining and Processing System (DMPS); the Learning Tracking System (LTS); and the Training Consultant Expertise Database (TCEDB). E-Payment System allows MetaCampus to have several payments methods in order to permit the closing of transactions online. Standards allow MetaCampus providers to sells their products taking advantage of scale by building on existing models to address wider audiences of users. Here re-usable content can be made better and re-usable content can be sold cheaper. In additions, standards lower vendor costs as well as consumer costs. In sum, MetaCampus standards can allow for a reduction of production costs and risks, while enabling new ways of creating and applying infrastructures for users and ensuring greater user accessibility to the product or service. MetaCampus standard framework also helps fulfil legal requirement and/or organizational policies for potential end users.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
