Objective
This collaborative RTD project will develop a practical method for the acquisition, storage and visualisation of high quality images of architectural details in historic buildings. Potential subjects include stained glass windows, frescos, mosaics and decorative mouldings. The VITRA project will in particular construct apparatus, consisting of a digital camera and suitable illumination mounted on a robotic platform, for the direct digital capture 'in situ' of colorimetrically accurate images of both reflective and transmissive surfaces. The project will also facilitate the creation of digital archives of such images and novel means of visualising them in their environments for the purposes of conservation, historical research, education and entertainment.
Objectives:
The project technical objectives are to:
1. Design and develop robotic platform to position digital camera high above floor;
2. Adapt high resolution digital camera for remote acquisition of colour images;
3. Develop suitable lighting for both interior and exterior illumination purposes;
4. Develop image processing algorithms for image registration and correction;
5. Specify an image database for image storage/retrieval adapted to needs of users;
6. Develop techniques for interactive 3-D visualisation of images in VR settings.
User organisations will be extensively involved to:
- Establish imaging requirements for decorative surfaces in heritage buildings;
- Demonstrate system operation at two or three sites of historical importance.
Work description:
The work will be organised into nine Work Packages WP1 - WP9:
WP1 - REQUIREMENTS SPECIFICATION - analyse user requirements for photography and visualisation of images of decorative surfaces in cultural heritage buildings.
WP2 - CAMERA & ILLUMINATION SYSTEM - customisation of camera and design and development of both external and internal illumination sub-systems.
WP3 - ROBOTIC PLATFORM - design and development of robotic positioning apparatus to position both digital camera and illumination rig.
WP4 - IMAGE PROCESSING SOFTWARE - design and development of software for correcting images, and for interactive 3-D visualisation of the buildings.
WP5 - IMAGE DATABASE - design and development of database to store images obtained from digital camera for access by applications.
WP6 - SYSTEM INTEGRATION & TEST - bring together various components to construct demonstrator systems for user testing at several sites.
WP7 - APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - develop three application pilots, using images from acquisition system. Each will be tested by real users.
WP8 - DISSEMINATION & EXPLOITATION - disseminate information about project objectives and achievements. Develop business plans for exploitation.
WP9 - PROJECT MANAGEMENT - ensure all deliverables produced on time within budget.
Milestones:
The project duration: 30 months, with five milestones at 6-monthly intervals:
M1 - Month 6: User requirements and definition of all devices completed;
M2 - Month 12: Working prototypes of camera, illumination and robotic platform;
M3 - Month 18: System integration completed, working prototype of software;M4 - Month 24: All software completed and operational systems at test sites;M5 - Month 30: Final evaluation results and exploitation plans completed.
