Extended Home Environment for Robust seamless interconnection between netwOrks

Objective

e-HERO aims to research, develop and validate an advanced affordable, symmetric, point-to-point broadband radio access network, for private and professional use within the Extended Home Environment. The system will provide two-ways bit rates of 10 and 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet) from the Central Office to the multi-dwelling residential building at a target price of 10 KEuro per data link. The system will utilise advanced technology and architectures, for efficient and flexible usage of spectrum resources to provide a cost-effective system (in Euro/bit). A complementary innovative home network (WLAN) based on Hiperlan/2 standard at speed of up to 100 Mbps will be developed within this project that allows to control the Quality of Service for the end-user.

Objectives:
The main objective of the e-HERO project is to research and develop an advanced affordable, symmetric, point-to-point broadband radio access networks to the Extended Home Environment. The system will provide two-ways bit rates of 10 and 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet) from the Central Office to the multi-dwelling residential building at a target price of 10KEuro per data link. e-HERO will serve as a platform for integration of broadband applications and interactive services for multiple home networks. In order to offer a comprehensive solution to the end-user, a home networking sub-system based on next-generation 100 Mbps HiperLAN/2 Wireless Local Area Network will be developed. This complementary home network will distribute the data inside the home and will have provisions that allow controlling the Quality of Service (QoS) for the end-user.

Work description:
The work is divided into 10 distinctly defined WP.

In the first stage, user requirements will be gathered and the specifications will be identified for the entire system and each subsystem. In parallel to the specification phase, the research of system parameters and architecture will be performed.Subsequently the consortium will research and develop the 3 major components of e-HERO: the Central Office component, the multi-dwelling building component and the home networking component. The main subsystems include the Modem, the Controller, the RF unit and antenna. In the next phase, the entire system will be integrated tested and validated (in laboratory set up). Finally, the testing, evaluation and assessment phase by the end-user (France Telecom) will be performed in one site (two systems simultaneously operating to simulate the end user environment).Management, Dissemination and Exploitation will be carried out continuously throughout the project duration.

Milestones:
The e-HERO project major milestones include: Project Kick-off Meeting: Month01; Define user requirements specifications for each subsystem: Month04; Modem, RF Unit and Controller: Critical Design Review: Month09; Home Networking Critical Design Review: Month09; Completion of e-HERO Subsystem Development: Month15;Completion of e-HERO Integration: Month 18; Completion of testing and evaluation steps: Month24; Submit Exploitation Plan & Submit Final Report: Month24.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
