A Virtual Assistant for Cellular Phones Users and Internauts

Objective

Following the objectives stated in the Technical Annex the results produced at the end of the produced are satisfactory from the partners expectations point of view. The results produced are the following:
1. New linguistic algorithms for automatic dialog generation
2. Dialog generator system
3. Production of an education-related dialogs database
4. Production of a 3D animated and expressive virtual assistant
5. Integration of text-to-speech and speech-to-text functions.

Compared to the initial planning some differences are to be pointed out: - application sector: the originally chosen application was the financial sector which has been replaced at the very beginning of the project and substituted with the education sector. - integration of speech recognition tools: a tool for speech recognition has been successfully integrated into the virtual assistant; however, the actual usefulness of such module is totally dependant upon the quality of the actually available voice recognition tools. The consortium is satisfied since it has verified the possibility from a technology point of view of integrating any of such tools; the effective integration will bring added value once the more advanced tools will be available in the market. In conclusion the final result is a “virtual assistant” specialised in the education sector that can be described as a conversational multitasks assistant, showing an anthropomorphic face and body and physical animations of the character body in three dimensions and dialoguing in a natural way with its user in order to enable him to interact more effectively with the Internet and its environment. The knowledge base upon which the assistant is built is divided in distinct parts:
- the dialogues database focused on the education sector,
- the general conversational database
- and the symbolic reductions database a general database with generic dialogues
The speaking language of the virtual assistant is French, while a feasibility analysis has been carried within the project to evaluate the implementation of the virtual assistant in the Italian language.
