Global Intermodal Freight Transport System

Objective

The main GIFTS aim is to develop a fully Integrated Operational Platform - GIP - for managing, in a total sense, door-to-door freight transport in an intermodal environment all around Europe. The GIFTS aim is to setup a system providing a full service to freight transport operations accessible to the Small and Medium players. GIFTS will provide applications for the operational (e.g. track, trace and monitor the door-to-door journey, aid in trip management, fleet management), as well as all the e-commerce functions and insurance of a door-to-door freight transport chain (including order matching, e-document transfer, e-payment). The GIP communication systems (based on current terrestrial and satellite mobile systems and emulation of the future UMTS) will interface the overall GIFTS components. Three validation campaigns will be carried out in a real life transport environment for road, rail and e-commerce applications.

Objectives:
1. To setup and operate the GIFTS platform and the Freight Data Communications Network accessible from all the actors along the supply chain and from all users in a door to door approach through an Internet connection, using terrestrial/satellite mobile communication link between the Service Centre and User terminals and emulating future capability trough currently available ones (i.e. Galileo and UMTS);
2. To set up and carry out 3 Pilot Demonstrations in an operative framework (covering the road, rail transportation and e-commerce applications) able to validate the GIFTS freight transport services that the users will need to be integrated in an intermodal transport environment;
3. To develop a fully operational administration system for the GIP to handle registration, authentication, audit trails, security, billing etc. for the users of GIFTS using a dedicated e-commerce platform4. To disseminate the results and the improvements deriving from GIFTS approach to the relevant users.

Work description:
The whole work for the Global Intermodal Freight Transport System (GIFTS) is divided in 7 Work Packages (WP#).
WP1 deals with the management activity, both technical and administrative, to be carried out during the project life-time.
WP2 analyses the user requirements and identifies the services to be inserted into the GIFTS Demonstrator.
The WP3 GIFTS designs the GIFTS Demonstrator Architecture, identifying the architectural elements of the Service Centre and User Terminals to be implemented: the Freight Administration Functions (integrating the set of freight Transport administration functions necessary for the door-to-door transport), the Freight Transport Operations Monitoring and Control Functions (developing all relevant functionality for the execution of transport operations that will be integrated into the GIP), the E-Commerce Functions (integrating all the e-commerce, e-business and e-payment applications).

The communication system will be set-up in order to allow the data exchanging between the User terminals and the GIFTS Service Centre. The WP4 implements and tests the GIFTS demonstrator (Service Centre and User Terminal). The WP5 develops three Pilot Projects for validating the GIFTS platform. The first Pilot is related to the Road transport and is focused on a transport chain starting from Greece crossing Adriatic Ionian corridor central Europe countries and ending in North Europe. The second Pilot is related to the Rail Transport and is focused on a complete physical transport chain starting from North Europe crossing Balkan area and ending in Greece. The third pilot is based on a subset of clients of a major European e-commerce, transport insurance and services company. The WP6 aims to perform the results evaluation activity for assessing the success level of technical developments and pilot applications. The WP7 develops appropriate Dissemination, Exploitation and Concertation activities and strategic planning for the GIFTS concept and system.

Milestones:
- Design of a general architecture of an Integrated Operational Platform for door-to-door freight transport;
- Design and development of a Central Communication System including major functionalities and applications;
- Demonstration by means of 3 Pilots Trial regarding the major functions and applications of the proposed platform;
- Demonstration of advanced performances emulating future functionalities such as those ones provided by Galileo and S-UMTS.
