Wireless Internet Service Engineering

Objetivo

The Internet is quickly evolving towards the wireless Internet. By 2003 the wireless Internet, based on third generation mobile phones, will have the same number of users as the fixed Internet today. This huge new market will generate a tremendous demand for mobile services, such as: travel information (directions, booking of restaurants and hotels); ticketing and schedules and so on. Developing these services will be challenging, because of technical and business problems, in combination with shortage of qualified personnel. This project aims at anticipating these problems by producing integrated tools (conceptual architecture and components for service and data management) and methods (process and guidelines) to engineer services on the wireless Internet, and by testing them on real world pilot services.

Objectives:
The wireless Internet will reuse some of the traditional Internet, but it will not be a simple add-on. New challenging problems arise from the handling of mobility, handsets with reduced screens and varying bandwidth; from the emergence of new business models. This project aims at anticipating these problems by producing integrated methods and tools to engineer services on the wireless Internet, capable of reducing cost and time to market.

Work description:
The project researches and develops methodologies and technologies for the development of services on the wireless Internet. Experimenting methodology and technology in real life applications is key both to validate and improve them. Therefore the project develops pilot services, together with tools and measures for evaluating them. This is accompanied by adequate exploitation planning and dissemination activities.

The project lasts 30 months. An iterative, incremental development style, with three iterations, roughly 9 months each is used.
- In iteration 1, the pilot applications V1 are built, using GPRS. Meanwhile, version 1 of methods and tools (M&T) is developed;
- In iteration 2, a richer version 2 of the pilots is developed, using M&T V1, on GPRS or UMTS. In parallel an improved version 2 of M&T is developed;
- In iteration 3, version 3 of the pilots is developed, using M&T V.2 and UMTS. A final version of M&T is developed.

The main deliverables of the project are:
- A high level architecture for mobile services. The architecture defines components, relationships among components, functions offered by components;
- Service management component (with functions user authentication, profile management);
- Data replication and synchronization component (with functions for replication and synchronization of data)#Software agents to support negotiation functions;
- A method to use the technologies, including a business model, process, guidelines.

Milestones:
M1: V1 of methods, technology and pilot services is ready;
M2: V2 of methods, technology and pilot services is ready;
M3: The final version of methods, technology and pilot services is ready. Methods and technology to develop wireless services have been developed and validated. They have proved to be able to provide advantages in cost and quality to their users. They have been published and disseminated to a wide European audience.
