Objective
FITNESS addresses the design of re-configurable Multiple Transmit and Multiple Receive (MTMR) transceivers and corresponding system level control mechanisms for their incorporation into composite radio environment, i.e. multi-technology radio networks. This technology will allow re-configurability to propagation channel characteristics, traffic condition, service requirements and number of available antennas at the access points (Base station) and terminals. Hence, it is expected to increase spectral efficiency at the link level as well as capacity at the system level and finally provide interoperability in a composite radio systems environment. While a large variety of wireless networks/devices are anticipated to co-exist in the fourth-generation wireless world, we choose to focus on UMTS and HIPERLAN/2 since these systems are seen to be of high commercial interest and appropriate network candidates for future wireless systems.
Objectives:
FITNESS aims to study in depth re-configurable Multiple Transmit and Multiple Receive (MTMR) techniques at the link and the system level to enable their incorporation into multi-technology radio networks, focusing on UMTS and HIPERLAN/2. MTMR re-configurability at the link level addresses intra-system operation for UMTS and HIPERLAN/2 and transparent operation between the two systems leveraging on multi-channel (space, time, code and frequency) baseband algorithms and multi-band antenna array for terminals and base station. MTMR re-configurability at the system level addresses the investigation of intra- and inter-system operation mechanisms as well as the evaluation and validation of performance enhancements with re-configurable MTMR technology utilizing the FITNESS simulation platform.
Work description:
FITNESS will be organised around four main tasks. The first aims to set the ground for the achievement of the proposal's goals as well as the selection and adaptation of innovative MTMR algorithms and their evaluation by means of simulations. The second will investigate link level MTMR re-configurabilty for intra-system operation for UMTS and HIPERLAN/2 as well as the inter-system operation between the two networks. The evaluation of the MTMR technology at the link level will be realised by means of simulations and also hardware test-beds (a wideband and a HIPERLAN/2 MTMR test-bed). The third task will investigate the impact/requirements and performance characterisation at the system level for re-configurable MTMR technology in an intra-system context as well as the interoperability mechanisms between the two systems. The performance enhancements with re-configurable MTMR technology at the system level will be evaluated and validated by means of a software-based simulation platform. Finally, the fourth task will conclude on project's results in terms of overall performance evaluation of MTMR technology, implementation issues and dissemination of project's results.
Milestones:
- Performance analysis of MTMR re-configurability for intra-system UMTS and HIPERLAN/2
- Performance analysis of MTMR re-configurability for transparent operation between UMTS and HIPERLAN/2
- System level evaluation of MTMR technology and corresponding control mechanisms
- Recommendations for MTMR deployment scenarios
